Austin’s Marry Cherry Share New Video

Austin’s got a history of some read psychedelic sounds, from the 13th Floor Elevators to the Black Angels, and it looks like Marry Cherry are aiming to take back into the darkness from whence it came. Their latest single is this heavy video of live footage, edited by Andy Ray Lemon with some crazy visuals to melt your brain. Their sound is definitely on the heavier side of the genre, playing more with these horror riffs that tower over you as the vocals take on that cavernous howl from beneath the foggy mixture. This is the band’s debut single, so be on the lookout as their sure to be making waves with this brand of noisy psych.

Pleased to Meet You: Chew Magna

To be fair, I’ve covered various works from the members of Chew Magna, which features folks who’ve played in Butcher the Bar and Songs for Walter. But, in this new line-up, you get something a bit heavier and a bit more brash, which I’m clearly not against! While the shattering noise that opens the song leans towards a brand of noise rock, the song quickly settles into this driving rhythm with vocals pouring forth in a steady fashion. As the song progresses, guitars and vocals skitter this way and that, fueled by the energetic pulse of the track. Definitely are some solid comparisons to old school post-hardcore meets early indie rock grooves…so find yourself in love here. Rumor has it that there’s an LP on the horizon.

Pleased to Meet You: Glimmer

Our friend Jeff from Dead Stars recently undertook a new project named Glimmer, just like many artists during the pandemic. Today we get our first listen to the project, and of course, it features these heavily fuzzed out guitar riffs, with Jeff’s voice remaining central to the natural melody rising from the tune itself. In a way, it sounds a lot like Dinosaur Jr, balancing noisy riffage and melodic tendencies, so I’m sure that we’re all going to appreciate what’s coming through our speakers, as its a pretty timeless sound. All of the recording was done in his new home up in New Paltz, NY after he moved away from Brooklyn, so let’s hope we get to hear more from Glimmer, sooner rather than later!

Guaxe Announce Self-Titled Debut

You’re probably wondering who Guaxe is at this point, and that’s fair, as it’s a new project from Dino of Boogarins and Pedro from Supercordas. One of the reasons I love Boogarins is their ability to experiment within the tightened constraints of modern psychedelia, and this new project seems to take those challenges head on. There are loops of guitars that seem warped on repeat, with this lightly galloping drum beat behind the wall…strangely the beat almost seems to get lost in the song, as the listener will, slowing down and catching back up. It’s this otherworldly pop music that seems fit for a science experiment, though it offers this glaring beauty; my favorite burst of pop comes in at the 1:14 mark and only lasts for five seconds, but lasts in my brain forever. Their self-titled album will be out on September 6th via OAR.
