Have Some Fun With Strange Names

Drudging my way through an insane week leaves me in need of some upbeat music I can dance and sing along to. If you are in the need of the same, look no further than this delightful new track “Into Me” from NYC via Minneapolis based band Strange Names. Seriously, this thing is a fun piece of dance inducing beats with elements of electronica, disco and of course pop. I dare you need to stand up and move to the beat. Double dare.

Strange Names will release a new album of tunes sometime in 2018.

New Music from Soltero

Soltero has been fairly quiet over the last several years, but you can’t keep a good songwriter down. This Friday Tim Howard will released Western Medicine Blues, and fans of literary folk will want to take note. He opens this new song with careful wordplay over lightly strummed chords; this would normally be enough to win me over, but Howard isn’t settled with just enough. Backing vocals enter just after the 1 minute mark, guitar chords become more pronounced in the mix…then we’re off with percussion rolling and guitar accompanying guitar flares. If you find this song as endearing as I, then look for the new album to drop on Friday!

Brooding Pop From FRAME

Man I love when checking out things for the website I sometimes find a track that wouldn’t normally be in my wheelhouse, but it impresses me big time. Such is the case with this new song “One of a Kind” from Brooklyn based artist FRAME. It’s a full and synth heavy pop number similar to a band like Baltimore’s Kindest Lines. Whomever you want to compare this to, you have to admit that it’s catchy as hell right? The answer is yes.

FRAME will drop State of Mind on October 27th via Concierge Records. Pre-order.

Enjoy This Track From Noah Engel

Man I’m really into this new track from NYC based Noah Engel. It’s like if Ty Segall somehow managed to craft beautiful lyrics on top of his guitar driven rock sounds. Sort of a singer/songwriter who also knows how to rock a bit. Certainly unique and certainly worthy of a few listens.

Mr. Engel will release his new LP Rock Soup on August 25th via Digital Soup Records.

Liven Up Your Day With Bloody Your Hands

New York based Bloody Your Hands might be one of the tightest bands instrumentally I’ve heard in quite awhile. As a three piece, it’s crazy that these guys can produce such a loud and intricate sound. New single, “Wandering Home”, is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. The pace is intense, the timing is impeccable, and the breakdowns offer a nice emotional break from the ferocity.

New album Monsters Never Die is out on July 7th.

Mellow Out With New Rose

As I strive to prove that modern country music goes beyond Sturgill Simpson, let me introduce you to New York based band New Rose. Their take on the genre veers in more of the slacker style with slow strummed acoustics and trippy pedal steel in the background. If my description doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, check out this new single “Waiting On Me” and make your own assessment. To me, it’s as if Destroyer started a group with Sun Volt as the backing band.

A new album entitled Morning Haze will drop on June 30th via Broken Circles (pre-order).

Dark Pop From No Kill

I always love it when a band I’ve never before heard of sends me some nice new tunes to start my day. This morning I was treated to just such an event via this track “Tremolo” from Brooklyn based group No Kill. It’s a delightfully dark and heavy pop number complete with heavy, distorted guitars and just the right amount of percussion in the background. Stay tuned as I receive more information about this promising up and coming band.

Fun Song From Adult Mom

I was out recovering from a SXSW hangover yesterday, but return today with some solid jams for your ever awaiting ears. First up for me is this fun and playful number called “Full Screen” from Purchase, NY based band Adult Mom. Won’t you help me in welcoming them to the ATH approved team?

Adult Mom will drop a new album entitled Soft Spots on May 19th via Tiny Engines.

Crunchy Rocker from QTY

qtyQTY are an upstart act from New York bringing a lot of promise with their debut track. It’s a hook-laden bit of rock n’ roll that seems steeped in the recent history of the band’s hometown…though I also hear a bit of the Replacements. Dan Lardner takes the reigns with the vocals, but you can hear the balance being brought by Alex Niemetz just beneath that, leaving the song with just enough contrast to make the whole thing interesting. The group have just signed on to Dirty Hit to release their debut, so be on the look out for more from NYC’s rising stars.

Stream New Album From Belle Mare

529431_528583087180356_926163089_nSome of you may recognize the name Belle Mare from their surprising debut EP entitled The Boat of the Fragile Mind out in 2013. Hopefully the band has been on your mind over the last few years because they’ve been working on a new album up in New York since that time. The album is called Heaven Forget and was released towards the end of last month. For those unacquainted with the band, be ready for some dream pop music similar to Beach House or My Gold Mask with some truly emotion evoking rises and falls. Basically, it’s pretty damn good.
