Noisy Rocker from TONER

For some reason, my Tuesday feels like a Monday; the usual energy of the week hasn’t quite kicked into gear, so I needed some slightly more angsty than my typical fare…thus the latest from TONER. The Oakland outfit specialize in that noisy guitar rock at the intersection of pop sensibility and shoegaze. At times, the weight of the song feels oppressive and ominous; layered noises can be heard darting through the song’s background. But, while they stray, there’s still breadcrumbs leading back to the land of pop…and thus I can be gloomy and smile. This jam appears on the group’s new LP, Silk Road, out April 17th.

Bouncy Pop Number from Neutrals

If that bobbing bass line that opens up this new single from Neutrals doesn’t get you, then I think you might want to call a doctor. That didn’t work? Well, maybe take into account the group features members of Terry Malts, Cocktails and Giant Haysticks? That should do the trick. But, if you’re still struggling, then let the rhythm push you on, then await those circular guitar lines that up the ante on the songs natural enemy. You might get a little offset with the deadpan delivery of the vocals, but those of you with punk rock in your veins should be more than ok. With only a handful of demos to their name, Kebab Disco aims to be a pretty powerful debut; it’s available for pre-order from Emotional Response.

Quiet Beauty From The Saxophones

Oakland based The Saxophones have received their fair share of coverage on our site over the years. All ATH staff members have been continually mesmerized by the quiet, yet still powerful feeling to all of their songs. I’m yet again pleased to share another hit from the band entitled “Aloha”. I suggest giving it multiple spins as each and every listen unfolds something beautiful to really enjoy.

You can purchase this song a new 7″ single by clicking here. Via Full Time Hobby.

Let Henry Nowhere Brighten Your Day

After a slew of some heavier tunes, I’m ready to switch gears a bit with this new song called “Don’t Care Where” from L.A. via Oakland based artist Henry Nowhere. What if The Drums made lo-fi pop in their bedroom? It would sound a bit like this. You’re in store from breezy, bright, and sunshine filled pop music. Easy listening if you will.

Henry Nowhere will release a new 7″ digital EP on September 8th featuring this track and one other. Pre-order from Sleep Well Records now.

Ferocious New Single From Club Night

Oakland based outfit Club Night sent over this new single called “Rally” and it’s definitely worth your time. It reminds me of a band like Dirty Projectors with it’s spastic tendency, but also offers some really intense, loud, noise rock. As I continue to give it spin after spin, I’m finding new things to like about it and enjoy each time. I suggest you check it out now.

Club Night will release Debut EP Hell Ya in August via Tiny Engines.

You’ve Gotta Listen to Rays

Man…in a week where I’ve been struggling to find anything I love, it’s great that Trouble in Mind Records just posted the announcement of this new Rays LP. Those of you who adored the the early work of Parquet Courts will surely find the band brandishing a similar post-punk fashion…though these guys sound a bit darker, less art(y). They band out the latter half of the track by filling it with a propulsive noise that’s tied back into the main vein of the song. You can always count on TiM bringing you a solid band and a solid record; look for this self-titled LP on March 31st.

Get Dreamy With The Saxophones

1501666_833023450074955_5070952818094037727_nOakland based The Saxophones just sent me this new single “If You’re on the Water” this morning and I had to share it with the world. It’s a very dreamy, very repetitive, and totally meditative type of song. For me, it’s been a perfect start to what is a cloudy and kind of gloomy Tuesday morning. Hopefully this is just the beginning of more great things to come.

Fans can purchase this song as part of a new EP available on July 19th. Picture disc!

Waterstrider Brings The Pop Funk

1978484_847699071915318_7854074846143757926_o

Waterstrider are a five piece from Oakland who first got their start back in 2011 and have evolved into the fully fleshed out sound that I have in this single for you below. “White Light” is a tight little number that features all the sorts of elements of a pop groove that you’re sure to love right away. It’s got eclectic percussion parts that remind me a little bit of Local Natives, and the falsetto vocals of Nate Salman really works well with the jangling guitars.  Now this band is unsigned and supposedly working on their debut full length record to be released sometime this year, but until then enjoy this song for all its fun and rejoice because you’ve almost made it to Friday.
