Top 15 Austin Albums of 2013

Local Albums 2tMan. Austin had a pretty incredible year; it was a far better year than I’ve encountered recently, making my ears, mind and heart quite proud of our hometown.  While it’s obviously difficult to get in on every single band in Austin, I made a list of the albums that were most impactful throughout the year, 2013.  I purposefully left off EPs and singles, not because I didn’t enjoy those, but because this is a list of top ALBUMS!  I’m sorry to those we left off, and encourage you all to send us your music as we continue our push to be a great voice for Austin music.  Without further ado…this is how we do it.  Read more

FFF8 In Pictures – Saturday Edition

BleachedSaturday featured legends and legendary performances, though usually not at the same time. Johnny Jewel gets best performance of the day with double duty killer jams from Chromatics and a manic dance party with Glass Candy. MIA eludes me. I just don’t get it, but okay, the kids like to here abbreviated beats up and down. Ice-T let Bushwick Bill freestyle. Deerhunter had the most epic sound check ever, reconstructing “Marquee Moon” to test the levels.

This giant photo post features Frank Smith (kinda), Ola Podrida, Bleached, The Impossibles, White Lung, Chromatics, Geographer, Glass Candy, Television, Tycho, Deerhunter, MIA, Ice-T and The Descendants. Click through…

trail_of_dead2

Date 5/4/13
Location The Belmont
Doors 7:30pm
Tickets $12 @ Ticketfly

Those looking to have their faces melted this weekend should head on over to The Belmont on Saturday night for a rare performance by Austin’s own …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead.  What’s even more interesting about this show is that we’ll be treated to a full performance of the bands stellar 2002 album Source Tags & Codes.  I’d be willing to bet a few other gems will be thrown in for encore.  If that doesn’t do it for ya, this is also a record release show for ATH favorite and fellow Austin riser Ola Podrida.  American Sharks will provide opening support for all.  At $12, this is a no brainer.

New Music from Ola Podrida

olapodrida_interviewWe’ve followed David Wingo and his project Ola Podrida for quite some time, so we were more than excited earlier this year when he announced Ghosts Go Blind, his third effort.  Things are slightly different, as Wingo has included a completed band to round out his sound on this album; this should come as no surprise to those who’ve witnessed the the group playing together over the last few years.  On this new single, it adds an uplifting aura to the folk-laden sound.  This might be a stretch, but the pacing alone adds a bit of Pedro the Lion flavor to the tune–we don’t mind that at all. You can expect more great songs when the record is released by Western Vinyl next week.

Beautiful Track from Ola Podrida

olapodrida_interviewYou know we’ve long supported Dave Wingo and his Ola Podrida project, but he’s been fairly quiet as of late, at least on the OP front…choosing to work on scoring films whilst working in a new band.  Finally, he’s completed his third LP, joined by a full line-up, which adds a different complexity to his quieted folk numbers.  There’s still the same emotional pull from his vocals, but the accompaniment by his new partners creates a depth that some might have seen as lacking (not me!).  His record is titled Ghosts Go Blind, and it’s being released by the folks over at Western Vinyl .

It’s the holiday season so quality shows can be hard to come by, but a headlining show at the Mohawk by local favorite Ola Podrida is an exception to this rule.  Rumor has it that Dave and crew are playing some new tunes from an album they just finished so fans of the band should definitely check this one out.  Opening support is provided by My Golden Calf and A.D. Blood.

Well, with cold weather comes that wintery music I love so much, and none do it much better than Dave Wingo and his band Ola Podrida.  Word on the street is that the group will have a new album sometime in 2012, so I’m sure the set will feature old favorites as well many new songs to boot.  Last time I saw them, they pulled off the set to perfection, giving me all the mellow tracks I adored, so get out there and find your own to adore; besides, you don’t have to work on Monday!  Opening the evening are ((Sounder)) and Donkey Skin.
