Last Week’s Jams (2.26 – 3.1)

As we ramp up towards SXSW, things have been in full swing over at the ATH camp. We ran a bunch of our “getting-to-know-you” interviews with the Ophelias, Jess Cornelius, Tigercub and Native Harrow. But, we also covered a shit-ton of new music that’s worth revisiting, if you’re up for it. Our old friends Blushing dropped a new tune from their next LP, plus we got to hear more from Dancer and Torrey in relation to their new releases. Long time ATH faves like Mo Troper and Rosie Tucker made an appearance too, with each having their own new records on the horizon. Plus, a bunch of other greats like Red Sleeping Beauty, Klaus Johann Grobe, Non La and more…so dive on in.

Orchid Mantis Shares Another Life

I wanted to spend some time this Monday morning hanging out somewhere rather quiet, somewhere to kind of let the silence of the world be appreciated, which is the perfect setting for this new Orchid Mantis tune. There’s this natural peacefulness to it, created by the general stroke of the guitar as it steadies in the front of the mix. For their part, the vocals hang back in the corner of the room, perhaps even drifting in from down the hallways, allowing the listener to kind of dwell in their own headspace. If this isn’t a Monday morning tune, I’m not sure what else is!

Enjoy This Orchid Mantis Tune

It’s more likely than not that you are unfamiliar with the experimental sounds created by Atlanta based musician Orchid Mantis. I assume this not because the music is not worthy of recognition, but because the artist has flown largely under the radar for the last several years (possibly on purpose). Popularity and notoriety will surely follow if more songs like this one called “Can’t See the Sun” continue to find their way onto the interwebs. Though somewhat experimental, the track is just downright catchy as hell and evokes a feeling of a more stripped down version of Beach Fossils with vocals akin to Jonathan Pierce of The Drums.

This song appears on a new album entitled Far From This World due out November 20th on Z Tapes.

Premiere: Orchid Mantis

It’s yet another warm morning here in Austin and I’m needing some chill music to help me ease into this long week. Thankfully my new friend Thomas Howard sent over this new song “No One Else Around”, recorded under his musical project Orchid Mantis. It’s been the perfect song to chill my Monday stress and ease me into the day. The beat is impeccable, the recording is tight, and the vocals blend in almost perfectly. Great track.
