ATX Spotlight: Orthy Covers Tom Petty

OrthyYep, another cover, another day.  But, Austin’s Orthy don’t just cover Tom Petty’s “Listen to Her Heart,” they totally reimagine the song itself, leaving no resemblance of the original save the lyrics.  There’s these dark electronic pulses during the chorus, while the remainder of the song is a smoothed-out electro croon.  The song features on a digital release that just came out this week via Dither Down, allowing listeners the chance to also listen to various remixes from the group’s E.M.I.L.Y. EP, which we raved about last year.  Give it a listen, and enjoy your day just a little better.

Show Pics: RBSS January ’15 @ Red7 (1/22)

RBSS Jan15 31I really do appreciate what Red Bull Sound Select is doing for locals. By selecting local acts to open for a touring group or a local mainstay, charging a cheap cover that involves getting there early, several bands are getting a few more eyes than a normal show. This, of course, is a pet peeve of ours; the venues and booking people go out of their way to get you a good lineup for your show-going dollar so get there to see the openers, geez.

The latest edition had an act form Dallas call Dark Rooms, local faves Orthy and was headlined by Slow Magic to bring the crowd. In fact, I was quite surprised by the masses there to see Slow Magic. There just might be something to this whole EDM fad. Heh.

Plenty of pics and more thoughts to follow…

Show Preview: Slow Magic @ Red7 (1/22)

slowmag

Date 1/22

Location Red 7
Doors 9pm?
Tickets $3 with RSVP

Orthy has been in the studio. Will we get a bunch of new jams? Hopefully.

Red Bull Sound Select hopes that by bringing Slow Magic through town you will get silly with locals Orthy and Dallas’s Dark Rooms. Slow Magic had a jam on our Best of 2014 so we’re good with it. The weather may suck, but let’s dance a little.

We know Orthy pretty well, so here is a sample from Dark Rooms. Hope you dig it.

Show Pics: Orthy @ The Living Room (5/25)

OrthyA little end the work week viewing…

When it came time to figure out what to do the night before the Holiday last Monday, we figured something relaxing, maybe a little fancy, friends, etc. How about Orthy and Royal Forest playing the W’s Living Room Live series? Drink specials? Sure. Couches, awesome! We even made dinner reservations before hand. I wore shorts that weren’t cut down from longer origins.

Our friend asked if my little camera that joined us was one of the black & white specialty types, which keyed me to shoot the night in monochrome. Why not? I was “on vacation”

The 2014 Austin Music Blogger Awards

AMBA 2014 Photo BannerIt was a great event. We were proud to be a part of it.

I have a list of winners and so many photos. Orthy sounded great, buoyed by Ian and Jeramy’s win for best DJs as Learning Secrets. Shivery Shakes ripped after their win for “Sidewalk Talk”. Jess was charming and haunting as ever, congrats. A Giant Dog stole the show with their set, while Mirror Travel may have given some voters buyer’s remorse. Magna Carda is hip-hop in Austin; go see them.

ATH Interview: Learning Secrets @ 10 Years

Learning Secrets BannerLearning Secrets is turning ten. They are having a party. Given that the guys behind Learning Secrets, Jeramy Neugent and Ian Orth, are in one of our local favorite bands, Orthy, we see these gents on a regular basis DJing to fill the pre and post-show earspace. We all wonder what all the fuss is about being a DJ. What happens behind the wheels? How do two guys end up spinning records together? How can you make a relationship last? Ian was able to take the time to answer a few questions on those topics and more. Read on for the low down…

Austin Free Week Reflections

ATH Free Week 14 BannerDespite the debates of recent months concerning Free Week and proper pay, it’s probably best if we look at the unique situation set up by promoters here in town (and Transmission wasn’t the only force putting on great shows!).  For a little over a week, every big venue in town was filling out line-ups with their favorite acts, the newest bands and the old stand-bys. Personally, I had an incredible time, and relished in the environment Austin offers.

Here’s some thoughts for you, as well as my highlights.
