Last Week’s Jams (10.9 – 10.13)

We’re getting to that point when everyone is scrambling to find their favorite tracks, find their favorite collection of songs to put into those fruitful lists that you’ll all look at, then claim to hate! We do it too! Still, covered a bunch of great new music last week. There were great new tunes from Red Pants and Teenage Tom Petties, plus we got to celebrate a really busy release week with stuff from Lightheaded and Upchuck, among others. Our friend Jared Leibowich had a new tune up, but it didn’t make it onto the DPSs yet, so be sure to circle back and check on that one. There’s a couple of long-burns too, from Native Cats, a Beacon School and the Uptights, all worthy of some deep listening. Stream on!

PAWS Bring Another Hit

Late last month, Scottish indie rock legends PAWS shared news of an upcoming album along with the hit single “One Nation Under Dog”. Understandably our interest was peaked with the new tunes, and today brings even more excitement and buzz with another new single called “Uncertain.” It sticks with the theme of a bleak outlook on the current state of things while growing older, all while cranking through some gnarly guitar solos and straight slacker rock.

The new PAWS self-titled album will hit streets on October 27th via Ernest Jenning Record Co. Pre-orders are live now!

It seems weird to say, but last week was the first time in a long time where I was able to find every song we covered on all the DSPs! Does this mean I’ve gone mainstream? Anyways, we had a few premieres running from the likes of Class and Alijca-Pop, so be sure to check those jams out.. And, as per usual, dipped our toes in the Austin pond, with new stuff from Holy Wire and the stream of Will Johnson‘s new LP. Oh, and we made sure we had as much Oceanic coverage as possible, throwing our weight behind Soft Covers, Native Cats, The Small Intestines and Exek! Give a listen to the singles below!

Paws Share One Nation Under Dog

If there’s a general feeling in the world, it seems to revolve around our future and our fears for what comes next for humanity. Paws, on their latest single, have captured that anxiety and built it up into the perfect piece of swelling pop rock. Personally, I’m a sucker for the way huge riffs and smashing drums rock you right into the track, before the riffs get peeled a way to reveal a warmed vocal driving home the tune’s melody. Backing vocals buoy the hook too, allowing the lyrics to really resonate with the listener as the band question our decisions as humans “under dog.” New single pops up on Paws new self-titled LP, out October 27th via Ernest Jenning Record Co.

We Are Scientists are blowing into town supporting the release of this year’s album, TV en Francais.  The record has done pretty well, but I’d like to advise you to catch the opening act PAWS.  The Glaswegian band brings a nice dosage of rock and pop to the table, but it’s also not every day a band from overseas gets to spend a little bit of time in our town.  You’ll also enjoy jamming to their most recent LP, Youth Culture Forever, or go even further back with Cokefloat.  Your Thursday night needs a dosage of fun? PAWS – Youth Culture Forever

October of 2012 saw PAWS‘ first full-length release in the form of Cokefloat! Which helped to bring the energy and exciting dynamics of their live performances into the ears of fans and soon to be fans. Two years later they are back with Youth Culture Forever, filled with ups and downs, robust and reserve. One moment it seems to be tamed, next the group launches back in full force, giving you a taste of the power that this group of gentlemen packs behind their punch. This sophomore record delves into a campy and raw rendition of garage rock, complete with some great tracks you won’t want to miss.

The group starts out seemingly soft on “Erreur Humaine” with some simple echoed vocals and electric guitar plucking, but if you’ve heard anything from this group before, you should know this mellow quality won’t last long and soon the quiet is replaced with raging guitars and amped up vocals. This off and on quality continues through the rest of this track, with the band giving you melancholic reserve and then robust growling chorus.’ Such a song is not complete without some bleak lyrics that portray the author as highly conflicted—you get the choral tag of “one should never go back/fuck with the past,” and later on: “I’m sorry I said I hate you.” This simultaneous feeling of disdain to change what’s already happened and regret for the past are perfectly in tune with the sentiment that the album’s title preaches.

Second up is “Tongues,” which seems to dabble down a surf-rock alley for a little bit and reminds me a lot of some of the tunes put out by Surfer Blood. The band doles out some rolling and deep drums as well as some jangly guitar parts that work together to give it that beachy feel, all while staying pretty fixed in the rock genre. The album then continues in a somewhat similar and yet different manner. This trio gives you highs and lows, be it within an individual track or from song to song. Most of the twelve tracks are pretty short and range a little in style, giving you the opportunity to find some songs to rock with and others to maybe not revisit.

   PAWS don’t take themselves too seriously and I don’t think we are meant to take this album in that light; after all, the name for this album apparently originates from the children’s cartoon, Adventure Time. However, if you listen closely, there are some gems of songs that do garage rock justice on Youth Culture Forever and promote a youthful, some may call, punk rock, lifestyle through coming to terms with human emotions like jealously and rage. Rock on.

pawsThanks to our friend Mike, we’re always on the tip of what’s happening in Glasgow, and the lads in PAWS have been on our radar since the release of their last effort, Cokefloat.  The band’s got this song that draws influences from various guitar-rock bands, though this song is more of a slow-burner, unfolding at a steady pace, rather than rushing through with feuding guitars…as many are ought to do. Fat Cat Records will be releasing the group’s new record, Youth Culture Forever; it’s slated for a May 6th release (they’ll be playing Austin on the 15th of May).

Great Track From PAWS

I’ve been rather enjoying this great new track called “Tongues” by Glasgow band PAWS.  When talking labels, I’d dare call this one an indie pop tune with a washed out, punk rock overtone.  I find myself hitting play time and time again once the play meter hits the end.  Great track.

New album, Youth Culture Forever, is due out June 2nd on Fat Cat Records.

More New Rockers From PAWS

It’s been a long, slow week and I feel like it’s time for some good ‘ol honest rock music in my life to perk things up a bit.  I’m satisfying my desires with not one, but two new songs coming your way from Glasgow based rock group PAWS.  Both songs are fairly straight forward rock tunes with nice drum action behind simple guitars and dual vocal duties.  I’m on board with Nate and also giving them my stamp of approval.  As previously mentioned, PAWS have a new album entitled CokeFloat! coming out on October 6th via FatCat.

New Ear Buster from PAWS

FatCat really has their hand on melodic noise rock from the British Isles.  Not only do they have our favorite The Twilight Sad on their roster, but they’ve just picked up PAWS to release their album, Cokefloat!, on October 9th.  There’s a great bit of exuberance in this track, with a youthful vocal attack dominating the song from the get-go.  I like how things are slowed down just a touch towards the end of the song, giving you time to capture your breath before they blast off in an angst-ridden fashion.  Definitely an exciting track from these Glasgow lads.
