Show Pics: ATH Goes Back To School

Summer SaltNathan summed it up in a book face post. He, with Mike’s help, runs a label that is proud of the content, proud of the people, happy to be helping bands in Austin have merch to sell and fund the next project. It is a ton of work; pursuing, promoting, logistics and coordination. I am happy to be associated with ATH records.

Hit the read more and view the greatness of Pollen Rx, Mean Jolene, Rose Selavy, Plantation Band, Young Girls, Basketball Shorts, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes (in drag).

Preview: John Wesley Coleman + Plantation Band @ Hotel Vegas (Tonight)

jwcSeems like a no brainer to me. It’s Wednesday, you’ve been locked in the house hiding from rising water, but the skies look to give us a break tonight, which means, you should grab your friends and go out. So why not enjoy the show over at Hotel Vegas that includes perennial Austin powerhouse, John Wesley Coleman. He’s the songwriter everyone loves, and he’s the one you deserve. Plus, our own Plantation Band will be opening the set, offering up their dark take on country vibes. And, to top it off, you get a nice little bit of non-local music via Vancouver’s Ballantynes. Go out tonight, go to this show.

Flavorsound Class of ’16 @ Barracuda (8.12)

flavorsavorI get it. Being a musician is hard, owning a venue is hard. But that’s anywhere in the world, even in Austin. But, while we have struggles here in town, we also have an e abundance of incredible acts popping up left and right. Flavorsound has organized a Class of 2016 Tape Compilation of the new bands that burst forth this year…including some of the acts on ATH Records like Plantation Band and Mean Jolene. It’s surely not an end all – be all list, but there’s great finds on the tape. So to celebrate, they’re throwing a release show at Barracuda tomorrow night featuring many of the acts…Planet Manhood, Lola Tried, Oozer, Mean Jolene, Vampyre and Sherman’s March. Stop by and check out some of the new sounds coming out of Austin. And if you live abroad, check out the Tape HERE or stream below.

Flavorsound Productions Class of 2016 Premiere

flavorsavorThe last few years in Austin have seemed like a downer, everyone worrying about how the music scene here is dying. Well, I know it’s troublesome, but that’s not an Austin-centric issue. So let’s look on the bright side with Flavorsound Productions releasing a compilation of theClass of 2016. These are all acts that either got their start in 2016; you can tell by listening that while things are tough for the artists, there’s still an abundance of talented acts everywhere you look. We even have a hand in releasing a few of these acts, like Plantation Band and Mean Jolene (coming soon). Stream the whole compilation below, and see what Austin is really all about.

They’ll have a tape release of the compilation on August 12th over at Barracuda, so be on hand to get yours.

Stream Most Intellectual by Plantation Band

PhotosPlantation Band are working with the good folks of ATH Records (that’s us!) to release their debut album, Most Intellectual. It’s our first foray into country music, but I assure you that labeling the band as such diminishes their abilities. Most Intellectual is the calm before the storm, as those who’ve witnessed the band’s live shows can attest, they’re growing in power, destined for great things. Their debut comes out this Friday, with a release show scheduled in Austin at Cheer Up Charlies on June 1st with their friends A. Sinclair. Stream the album below, fall in love with it and commit your future to the band…be glad you did.

Thursday Night is Crazy for Austin Shows

Austin, I love you.Usually I like to pick one or two shows for the night and give you a rec, but Thursday is absolutely crazy; I guess it’s Cinco de Mayo.

You want some country? Check out Jason Boland and Plantation at 3 Ten ACL. Or Sturgill Simpson.

Little Austin punk rock? Go for Ghetto Ghouls and Nameless Frames at Beerland.

An ATH approved show? How about Rose Selavy, Mean Jolene, and Shivery Shakes at Sahara Lounge.

And don’t forget the teen friendly, Stereogum approved 1975 show at Stubbs.

You could even double dip, hitting up Luna early, then catch one of these late shows.

Brand New Plantation Band Tune + Album Announcement

PhotosDid I tell you that RayRay and I are some old school country boys? Well, one of my favorite things about the genre is the tradition of storytelling and matters of the heart, which I think is a central theme that runs through the music of Plantation Band. I’m really excited for you all to hear their debut album, Most Intellectual, which will be released on May 27th via our ATH Records label (pre-order HERE). But, one can’t have an album announcement without bringing out another great country-style ballad, so I’ve included one below for your enjoyment.

The band will be playing at Cheer Up Charlies on June 1st to celebrate the release of Most Intellectual.

Introducing Austin’s Plantation Band

IMG_5535Over at ATH Records, we’ve been working hard to bring you lots of good stuff, but Mike and I felt like we needed to mix it up just a bit. Luckily, an email rolled in with a submission from Plantation Band, offering us a take on their version of country music. Growing up, Townes and Waylon filled my living room, so it seemed like a perfect way to venture into new territory…so as not to get stuck putting out the same LP over and over. I know very little about the band, only some blurred photos they sent our way with the album and its art. The album’s filled with soulful ballads and country stompers, so I wanted to introduce you to the group today. They’re debut LP will come your way this April, so get yourself ready for Austin’s newest country balladeers.

ATH Records 2015 Wrap-Up — Looking at 2016

athrecordsWe’re about to move forward to a new year, so I wanted to take a brief look back at our ATH Records releases in 2015, and give you a hint at what’s coming your way from us in 2016. We only had a few releases in 2015 (3), but we’ve already got four on the slates for 2016, so let’s look back and hint at what’s next. I threw in some songs so you could see/hear what we’ve been doing. Make sure to go like the bands on FB (it’s sad that it helps) and if you’re inclined, you can like our FB Page too.  Read more
