Great Power Pop From The Singles

12079300_10154232164475898_1374419231077298841_nSometimes we can all use a little bit of power pop in our lives to rejuvenate our spirits and brighten up the day.  Today we will be receiving our spice of head nodding music from L.A. based band The Singles.  The track they have for us entitled “Sweet Tooth” is truly hard not to like.  Having been around now for over a decade, it’s hard to believe that the group can still churn out such tasty hits.

Stay tuned for an upcoming release in 2016 from The Singles.

Fresh Power Pop from Coastal Town

10838227_866582683381693_1382080938002639839_oI’m going to be honest with you; I know very little about Coastal Town. But, I will fill you in on what information I do have…it’s just not much. The voice should be familiar to ATH followers, as it sounds like it’s Frode from I Was a King at the helm. This leads down a crazy path of tales and such…is I Was a King over or is Coastal Town just a new project? I do know from the IWaK blog that they have spent recent time in studio with Joe Pernice and Robyn Hitchcock…could this be part of it? I don’t really know any of it for sure, but I know the songs are incredible…so as I know more, I’ll keep you posted.

Have You Heard of Death by Unga Bunga

deathbyungabungaIn the world of band names, I’ll have to say that Death by Unga Bunga falls on the stranger side of things (though clearly not the strangest).  Still, their music isn’t too far out there, instead nestling itself alongside today’s purveyors of power pop. It’s got a hint of garage influence and brattiness, though there’s still this undeniable lineage to early 90s alternative pop music. Think of listening to Superdrag record hits in your neighbor’s garage; it sounds like a recipe for success if you ask me. The band’s debut Tell Me Why EP will be released on October 2nd, so keep an eye and ear out for the Unga Bunga.

18 Years of Rock N Roll from Joe Bordenaro

josephWell, the 18 years is more a reference to a lifetime of writing music in one’s soul, as Joe Bordenaro has only lived for 18 years.  That’s exactly why this new tune is rather exciting, seeing as he’s written such a great tune at such a young age. Joe’s first single comes out this week courtesy of Canvas Club, and it’s just a great power-pop tune to get you through your day; the guitars twist and distort in all the right places, and there’s an earnestness in his nod to pop music, especially in the vocals.  Keep an eye on this youngster…we should see more coming from him soon.

A New Song and Album from Barreracudas

11169775_10153293848183410_3988009600278316114_oYou’d have to go all the way back to 2011 to see our adoration for Barreracudas…the ATL power-pop band.  I’ve been waiting for something brand new from the group, and they’ve managed to trickle out a couple of excellent 7″, but it looks like the group has a new full-length coming our way; it’s titled Can Do Easy, and has a release on Oops Baby Records.  This song came along with their announcement, though it’s been part of the band’s live set for a little bit.  You’ll hear huge riffs and hooks, all of which make make me a happy listener.

Sick Sad World Garage Rock Supreme

sswI’m sure everyone is waiting for some new genre to break through to the masses, but in the meantime the combination of surf/garage rock is still alive and kicking…and it always deserves mention when it’s done as well as Sick Sad World‘s new single.  There’s a propulsive drum beat, though nothing outlandish; it holds the beat perfectly for the guitar work of Jake Jones to kick in with some solid power riffs.  Say what you want about the genre growing weary, but when it’s execute this well, I can’t help but turn it up and rock on out.  Look for the band’s new album, Fear and Lies, on April 21st via Help Yourself Records.

Stream a New EP from Connections

connectionsOne of the great little-known bands I’ve come across in the last few years has been Connections; I got turned onto them by a friend at the record store. They had a great effort, Into Sixes, that may have been drastically overlooked this year, but this new EP deserves a lot of attention. It’s a short little EP, offering up some more gems for fans of catchy power pop fans; it was just released this week by Hozac Records. I promise, you’ll love every song on the 5 Imaginary Boys EP.

Brand New 7″ from Barreracudas!!!

promiseWhen was the last time we heard from Barreracudas? If I’m looking at my calendar, it’s been several years…that’s far too long.  The Atlanta act has crafted some great hits that all of us here at ATH love, such as “Baby Baby Baby.”  Sounds like the band is up to their catchy power pop hits again, having just announced a brand new 7″ on Oops Baby Records.  One side, however, does offer a more classic power punk sound, like the classic Ramones hits that seemed more built to enthrall arenas than dingy punk clubs (I wasn’t there so I can’t be sure). Anyways, enjoy listening, and pick it up if your soul is so inclined.

Turn Up with Wild Smiles

10386988_628923807203351_9116171390421186735_oThere are two sides of the power-pop/garage rock coin, at least two that I can always subscribe to when listening.  There’s the gritty version, filled with sloppy hooks, or there’s the polished huge riffs.  The perfect example of this, in my mind, comes in the battle of Terry Malts vs. Wild Smiles.  I love the Malts and their gritty style, taking nostalgic rock and fueling it with booze and exuberance.  But, the Wild Smiles, who I’m here to talk about, take a similar approach, but clean things up, giving you more accessible hooks. You’re supposed to love both!  And if you do, you already have the Terry Malts LP (or else you’re behind the times), so go ahead an pick up the Wild Smiles LP, Always Tomorrow, and enjoy the rest of your day.
