Show Preview: Black Bananas @ Red 7 (5/12)

Date Saturday, May 12th
Location Red 7
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $8 from Transmission

So Friday is for dancing, and Saturday you gotta rock.  What better show is going on in town for those needs than the Black Bananas show over at Red 7.  Black Bananas is Jen Herrema, and basically it’s RTX (her former band from her former band Royal Trux) under a different moniker; they’ll be promoting their recent album Rad Times Xpress IV, which got a lot of love from P4K.  Also, Dwarr, the bluesy metal fanatics on Drag City are also co-headlining the evening, so you’re main acts are definitely tasty, but you’ll also have the always excellent Magik Markers opening the evening.  You’ll want to get there early to witness their greatness. Have fun kids; should be a blast!

Show Preview: Tragedy (w/ Screaming Females) @ Red 7 (5/4)

Date Friday, May 4th
Location Red 7
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 from Transmission

Tragedy, Criaturas and Impalers typically play a harder bit of rock n’ roll than what we generally cover over here at ATH, but I wanted to toss this up so as to spread a little more love on one of our favorite acts, Screaming Females.  The band is on the road, touring to support their recent album, Ugly.  Not only has the album (and the band) won lots of praise, but they have perhaps one of the strongest front women I’ve ever seen at the helm. Marissa Posternoster comes in a tiny package, but man, what a punch.  You’ve got to see her belt out the licks to completely understand, so even if you’re not into the rest of the line-up, you need to stop by and see Screaming Females. But, don’t fret, the group will be back soon for Chaos in Tejas–we’ll have more on that later.

Show Preview: Frankie Rose @ Red 7 (4/14)

Date Saturday, April 14th
Location Red 7
Doors  1000 pm
Tickets $8 from Transmission

The former Dum Dum/Vivian Girl Frankie Rose hit the ground running this year with the release of her album, Interstellar.  It showed a definite focus, highlighting Rose’s warm vocals in the gently constrtuced pop structures.  That alone is enough to make you hit up this cheap show, but, you can also catch Dive, a new favorite of ours. The group features members of Beach Fossils, and they should be pushing their upcoming album for Captured Tracks.  Oh, and that’s not enough? Well, catch Cheap Curls…another former Dum Dum Girl kicking off the night.  Seems like a great place to spend a Saturday evening.

The Bronx @ Red Seven – 7/25

thebronx2Let’s face it, we all need a little hard rock in our lives from time to time, and no one is going to do a better job than The Bronx. Whether it be their high fueled live show or just the ballsy rock you dig, you’ll want to find yourself at this show on Saturday evening.  The evening’s set will take place at Red Seven and the doors are set to open at 8 PM.  Be sure to get plenty of fluids and rest, as you’ll need it for this show.

I Got Jay Reatarded Last Night

It’s less than twelve hours since I walked away from the scuzzy walls of Red Seven, and still my ears are ringing from the sheer level of noise that I gladly witnessed, as rock n’ roll returned once again to my life. It’s funny, I listen to a lot of music, but its seems rock has become less of a staple in my music dietary supplements. I would like to extend my gratitude to Jay Reatard for reaffirming my belief in it’s greatness – even with possible hearing loss.

Jay Reatard @ Red Seven–8/3

This Sunday we will be fortunate enough to get to hear the garage rock of Jay Reatard.  He’s made lots of music news with his hard to come by set of 7″ series on Matador Records, and he will take the stage in our hometown at Red Seven.  If anything, it should just be a good old fashioned rock n’ roll show–just don’t get punched in the face. That means keeping your hands and feet in the bus at all times.

Pick up your tickets.

Also, you can hear University of Minnesota’s Radio K stream some in-studio performances by Jay if you hit this spot.
