Whimsical Share Rewind Video

We’re going to have ourselves a little Shelflife party over here at ATH, which is completely okay, as it’s one of my favorite labels. Earlier we had that hot Salt Lake Alley tune, and now we bring you the latest from the dream-gaze outfit, Whimsical. The video, like the song, is definitely shrouded in a bit of denseness, with the guitars churning out this wall of noise that serves as the background; the video uses slow pacing and these similarly heavy color tones to match that vibe. Musically, Krissy Vanderwoude’s voice is able to pierce the shroud of darkness, delivering this pulsing bit of melody that shimmers on the surface, as this genre should. If you dig it, Melt will be out on April 1st.

Time Travel with Triptides

Some acts are moving away from the psychedelic craze, but some bands, like Triptides are still at it, though I’m pretty fond of their approach. They’ve gotten rid of that hazy drug-addled guitar sound, polishing it off a bit more in favor of a more pop-centric approach. But, in it’s psych restraint, it allows the band to really draw from their natural harmonies, especially with their “ooh la las.” I can just picture myself zoning out in a blacklit room with this single playing in the far our background. Their new effort Afterglow comes out this Friday via Requiem Pour Un Twister Records.

New Music from MELT

meltMELT have been on my radar for the last few months, but as we wind down the year, I’m really looking forward to the release of their debut, Riffer. It’s an interesting approach, based on this single…a world where post rock and dream pop collide. The chords wrap themselves around one another, while the vocals are released with a soothing tone that almost sinks beneath the mix. It’s almost heavy, but not quite, offering up enough melodic intoxication to keep me from turning away. Look for the debut on November 25th via Topshelf and Danger Collecitve.
