SxSW 2017: ATH vs SOTO Party Pics

Who is ready to relive the greatest day of music ever assembled by John Laird and Nathan Lankford? Ever.

The jams were copious as were the tender moments. The showcase highlighted the talent in Austin with bands watching bands that shuffled up to be other bands. We had international celebrities in attendance, as well as every familiar face possible. I took photos, some with an Instax. We ate sausage wraps and drank beaverages. It was perfect air for a whisky.

Click through and be impressed.

ATX Spotlight: Brand New Roaring Sun Track

roaringsunIf you’ve been following us, we’ve been following Roaring Sun, the newest young act in Austin to really win us over. The trio of youngsters, first started by the Rawlinson brothers, are still so young that they’re willing to throw in all their influences to see what sticks. We’re fortunate for that, as they’re crafting this delightful pop bits that look ready to build a promising career. This song has some electronic touches, washes of distorted guitars and a softness in the vocals that makes your heart swoon. But, the special part of this new single comes right after the 3 minute mark when they break into this elaborate pop world akin to Grizzly Bear. I continue to be impressed by how quickly these guys have come around. Keep an eye out Austin…and beyond.

Tonight: Roaring Sun, Growl, Pollen Rx @ Mohawk

athshowFrom time to time, we hereat the ATH like to put on shows for you all in Austin, and it just so happens we have couple of gigs lined up this week, with our first coming tonight at Mohawk following the Anthony Green set. We’ve recently agreed to work with Pollen Rx on their debut full-length, Sunshine Emptiness, so if you’ve yet to check them out, tonight’s a good time. Growl, one of our long time favorites, return to the stage after taking a few months off to wrap up their own album and work on some other projects…never an act to miss. Plus, Roaring Sun get the headline spot, with these youngsters grabbing our attention with their recent hard work and rad new songs, like the one below.

Tonight’s Shows: Peach Kelli Pop or Roaring Sun

austiniloveyouIt’s one of my favorite seasons for music. Bands are traveling, shows are popping up, and nary a night passes without something great going on in Austin. Tonight, you’ve got two great choices: Peach Kelli Pop at Sidewinder or Roaring Sun at Barracuda. PKP brandishes surfy guitar-pop, and they’ll be joined by perennial local faves, Sailor Poon. Speaking of the Sailor Poon, they just released a video for their track on the Slack Capital Comp…find it HERE. On the other hand, you’ve got young psych-pop upstarts, Roaring Sun. While I may be biased, having taught one of their members years ago, I’m excited by what they’re crafting. They’ll be joined by Taiga, as well as Honey and Salt. So you can catch a traveling act, or something wholly Austin. Hear tracks from both suggestions below.

Keep an Eye Out for Roaring Sun

racecarWe’ve previously written about Roaring Sun, being somewhat familiar with the group’s members, but now I’m definitely convinced you need to keep an eye out on the young act. Their latest single starts out innocently enough…plodding piano part, ringing guitar and a nice vocal. It would have been well-enough to just leave it hanging there, but the group builds the sound into this brilliant swell of psych-tinged Cali-pop, breaking it down with a nice solid groove to close the track out. They’ve got a show next week over at Barracuda, so if you’re in Austin, you should get in on loving these guys before they break into the big-leagues.

ATX Spotlight: Meet Roaring Sun + Show Tonight

12661934_809210662534869_5695155112711155093_nFull disclosure, Roaring Sun is a young new band in Austin, and I actually taught one of these kids long ago…but I didn’t expect his musical tastes to progress (nor his songwriting). Listening to the first single he sent my way, it takes some modern touches a la Cut Copy, but there’s also a feeling that it owes some of the electronic flourishes to Grandaddy. It’s exciting that these guys are so young, and can come out with such polished production. They have a show tonight at Cheer Up Charlies too…with other young acts, The Cuckoos, The Spoils and the Avocados. Enjoy this upbeat number.
