Checkout Shapeshifter From Mini Trees

Oh how we adore Lexi Vega and her musical project known as Mini Trees. She’s been bringing us hit after hit for the last several years, and this new tune “Shapeshifter” proves to be yet another jam for her repertoire. Often time people can confuse indie pop with things from just a straight radio ready pop style, but this track perfectly hits on both elements of indie with hints of pop. I can’t get enough of it.

This track is part of a new EP entitled Burn Out which is due on March 1st via Run For Cover Records.

Sun June Share Mixed Bag Single

There are a lot of really great songs in the Sun June catalog, but if I’m being honest, “Mixed Bag” might have quickly risen to the top of my charts. Something about it feels like home, something that feels like Texas (and yes, I know there’s a mention of Texas, so its more than subliminal!); it feels like a cruise down the road with a carload of your best friends, windows down as the night’s just cool enough to feel a breeze, and still warm enough to make you sweat. Despite it feeling like a Texan teen dream, digging deep reveals all these striking little earworms the group carefully laid into the mix on this tune. Bad Dream Jaguar is out on October 20th via Run For Cover.

Sun June Announce Bad Dream Jaguar

Sun June‘s newest record should be absolutely huge, which comes as no surprise to those of us mucking about in the Austin music scene. Today, they announce Bad Dream Jaguar, with a single that serves as the perfect summary for their entire catalogue. If you lock into the rhythmic nature of the tune, it seemingly works as a sublime track to turn up as you head down the road; it has that movement naturally coursing through, particularly in the way the guitars are recorded too. But, with Laura Colwell’s vocals hanging loftily in the air, you can feel the oppressive heat of Texas and the need to just soak up the sheer size of the state. Personally, I love the noisy discord at the end, adding that devil-may-care attitude to their well-crafted blend of pop rock. Bad Dream Jaguar is out on October 20th via Run for Cover Records.

Another Hit From The Berries

Matt Berry is a Seattle based musician who the ATH team has been down with for quite some time now. His musical project known as The Berries has seen a ton of posts on this here site over the last 3-4 years. His approach to songwriting with funny nuance on top of Americana inspired tunes for a very “Matt Berry” style of indie pop has always hit a chord with us. Naturally this means I am again excited to share the 2nd single entitled “Down That Road Again” from Berry’s upcoming new album. This guy has really honed his craft and is ever evolving into one of the best songwriters in the indie game right now.

The Berries new album, High Flying Man, will release on August 19th via Run For Cover Records.

More from Tony Molina

So you’ve likely already heard from Tony Molina and his latest single, therefore I’m just getting it up here because I want it in next week’s playlist, as that’s where the hits are. This tune uses a little piano mixed in with the heavy strum of Tony’s guitar, creating these ridiculous moments of charm that are unmatched in anything else you’ll hear out there today, methinks. I always marvel at how Molina’s songs feel stretched and beautiful and full of magic, despite being under two minutes long, but then again, should we be surprised at this point? Another good track from Tony; his In the Fade LP is out on August 12th via Run for Cover.

Obligatory Tony Molina Post

I’m a big Tony Molina fan, as the site would indicate. Yesterday we got news of a new LP, which seems to have almost sold out already. Tony’s been working at writing great short pop songs, and this go round, it sounds like he’s keeping the fuzz right in the tunes, as you can tell by the guitar work. His new LP In the Fade is dropping via Run for Cover Records on August 12.

Mini Trees Deliver A Hit

We’ve certainly loved seeing the musical progression and sonic maturation of L.A. based Lexi Vega and her project known as Mini Trees. After tons of praise over the last few years, Vega is back in 2021 with a new album coming in September which will feature this new single “Carrying On”. You will definitely want to take some time to check out this bright, fresh and catchy new tune from Mini Trees.

New album Always in Motion will drop on September 17th via Run for Cover Records.

Sun June Announce Somewhere LP

With the release of “Singing” last month, we all knew Sun June had something cooking; today they officially announce the release of their new LP, Somewhere, handled by Run for Cover and Keeled Scales. For me, I’m not sure what’s more striking at this point…the song or its accompanying video. I love the use of light and shadow in the video, directed by the band’s own Laura and Stephen, but damned if the song doesn’t blow the rest of the musical competitors out of the water. The song, trickles in around forlorn notes and Colwell’s solemn delivery; you’re almost oblivious to the subtle tension building, bursting through near the 2:50 mark to deliver an emphatic sonic euphoria that solidifies the song’s greatness. The LP will be out in February of next year!

Sun June Sign with Run for Cover Records and Share Single

Austin’s Sun June probably need no introduction out there, but rest assured, they’re one of the best exports we’ve had in our fair city in a good bit. Today we get news that they’re signing on to work with Run for Cover Records (they’ll still work with Keeled Scales too!) for their next album, slated for release in 2021. They’ve made said announcement with a new single, and a video featuring their local ATX neighborhood. It’s hard not to be mesmerized by Colwell’s voice in this one, with this powerful softness that exudes confidence. Behind her, the band work on creating this delicate space, perfecting notes that hang in a Hill Country landscape. Simply put, this song feels like home. Look for more from the band as we try to escape 2020.

Young Guv Offers She’s a Fantasy

It seems Young Guv is going to continue his shapeshifting ways on Guv II, as he shares another track from his forthcoming album. It’s interesting, as there’s this sort of soft power-pop vibe stomp that circles back and back again, but the it’s been the harmonies in the song that have really drawn me into the track. Honestly, I can’t help but hear touches of the Grateful Dead when they weren’t jamming lurking in this tune, only furthered by some of the “everything and the kitchen sink” work going on in the song’s latter half. Looking forward to seeing how this all ties together when Guv II drops next week via Run for Cover Records.
