For this show review, we’ve brought in a new contributor to the team who will hopefully hit up some shows we might not normally attend and offer even more coverage in the Austin area. On Saturday night our new writer, A.Burnett, went out to Scoot Inn for a show by the now legendary performer Dan Deacon. She wrote some words for us and took some pics as well. This Friday Gentle Reminder Records will release the much-anticipated new LP from DC outfit Saturday Night. But, before they drop that LP, why not tease you with one more insatiable single. It opens with this heavy-ish riff…a little funky until the drums come in and change the song’s attitude. They roll over that riff, matched with the vocals to craft this melody you can’t put down. Slowly, the background starts to fill with little whispers, growing more prominent until Nora bursts forth to provide the perfect accent to the track. There’s enough bravado and fun in the rambunctious closing minute that you can’t help but let a smile crack across your face. Order the self-titled album right HERE!
Saturday Night are starting off the cycle for their new record with this great tune. The DC group has this almost garage vibe, but there’s something from the vocals that’s making me invest deeply in the band. It’s a slight little inflection, like an uplift at the end of the notes, akin to the way Ted Leo operates. But, that vocal ploy isn’t enough, as they bring in a soulful female vocal counterpart to balance things out. It’s catchy and ballsy and really good; the band will be releasing their debut self-titled album via Gentle Reminder Records in August.
If you weren’t already well aware of a little band called Ought, you should probably fix that really quickly and then do some acquainting with the solo project of the lead vocalist with Tim Darcy. The best way for you to do so is by watching the video below, which is Darcy’s latest single from his upcoming solo release. “Still Waking Up” is a brief glimmer of sincerity from a voice that you’ve come toexpect cynicism and sarcasm from. It’s quite refreshing, and the music video will have you harkening back to your John Hughes cinema days. Take a listen and watch below.

Man. This might just be me, but I think that Ought is probably one of the most important, underrated acts around the music scene. Now you have Tim Darcy dipping toes in the solo water, and it sounds just as rad as I wanted it to be. The musical work is just a steady dose of post-punk guitar rock, but Tim’s voice has this distinctive sound that makes his work incredibly impacting, not to mention meaningful once you unfold the lyrics. Putting this one out there, as it’s now on my highly anticipated album list for next year! Saturday Night comes out on February 17th via Jagjaguwar.
Early on Jonti released Sine + Moon on Stones Throw Records featuring the track “Saturday Night Songs,” but he wasn’t quite satisfied with it I suppose. He went back into the studio with his friend Peanut Butter Wolf and re-recorded it, fleshing out the track with a few more arrangements. He then retitled the tracks, “Saturday Night.” I love the way the strumming sounds on this recording, and the backing vocal echoing in the far off distance.; it’s the intimate sort of track that really sinks into your soul, especially when you hear the crackle of the tape. He’s also done a video for it, which you can find HERE.

Rock n’ roll season is clearly upon us, and Mohawk is kicking things off the right way. They’ve got one of the best live acts around coming to town Saturday night with King Khan and the Shrines taking to the stage. We haven’t really heard a lot of new stuff coming from the camp, but their catalog is worthy of endless sets of straight out jams. And if that wasn’t good enough, the most excellent Jacuzzi Boys will be starting your night out the right way, fresh off the release of their album, Glazin on Hardly Art. Come on folks, get out and get rad.

I’ve already caught one amazing show over at the Mohawk this week, but even that might not compare to the gloriousness that will be this Toro y Moi show. Chaz has been putting out effortless pop tunes for some time, and lately he’s been playing with a full-on band, which always entertains. As if that wasn’t enough to get you there, new indie darlings Unknown Mortal Orchestra will be bringing their quirky pop jams to the stage just before, getting you a chance to see one of the new “best” bands around. Oh, and did I mention that my favorites, Bass Drum of Death, are going to kick the whole night off? Well, you gotta be there; there’s not another option.
