Last Week’s Jams (4.28 – 5.2)

One third of the year is behind us now, and so we’re getting towards that moment when arbitrary best of 2025 lists began to pop up, but we’re keeping our eyes on the prize, focusing on new music, however it comes. There were some definite bonus tunes coming our way, like new Stereolab, as they prep for their forthcoming LP. Slumberland continued their great 2025 by announcing a new Autocamper LP (along with Safe Suburban Home). Personally, I was really excited to hear that Far Caspian has a new one on the way, as I loved the single shared this week. Perennial favorite acts also dropped new singles, so you’ll hear ditties from The High Water Marks, the Beths, Provoker and the Serfs. Give a little listen and start making your own mid-year list!

We’ve been jamming out to SCHOOL for a bit over here at ATH, and their debut album is on the books for a Fall release, so seems perfectly fitting that they’d have a brand new track ready for us. This go round, they’re bringing out a steadied bit of guitar pop, mostly working with the emotional appeal of the vocals and the guitars, as those are the driving force of the tune. You’ll hear some little drum hits nipping at the mix, but for the most part the softened churn of the vocals atop an angularly running guitar gives enough movement to make the track and its accompanying video work perfectly. Look for I Think My Life Has Been Ok to hit this September via Geographie.

Our pals over at Geographie are stoked to announce the debut album from SCHOOL, dropping early in the new year. That said, you don’t have to wait too long, as the group have a single they’d love to squeeze into your rotation today: “The End.” There are really two pieces to this song. On one hand, you get modern bedroom pop, albeit spun through a bit of a disaffected youth lens. Then, you flip it over and there’s some grungy chorus that opens up on its back half to churn the tune into a sprawling pop number. Rinse and repeat, and you can certainly hear why we’re stoked with what the band are offering. We’ll keep you posted when we hear more about that new LP.

There’s no denying that I hold the 90s Britpop sounds in high regard; I still listen to a bunch of stuff that I got into in the mid90s, so SCHOOL is definitely channeling those same vibes, albeit with a slightly noisier element that’s hanging about in their latest single, “N.S.M.L.Y.D.” You can hear the curl of the Gallagher brothers in the way the vocals just sort of wrap themselves up at the end of each syllables, perfecting that classic vibe. And, while the vocals are spot on, they’ve incorporated the modern revisiting of noise elements into the background, working just behind that straddling synth line, thus ensuring that it’s both nostalgic and modern and sure to please. This tune brought to you courtesy of Geographie.

I’m Stuck on School

swedefishschoolSure. I went back to teaching this week, so technically, yes, I’m stuck on school.  But for this purpose, I’m talking about the delightful Swedish quartet, School (not to be confused with the School).  There’s just something super enchanting about the bounce kicked off by the snare work in conjunction with those surf-style guitar licks; or, maybe I’m also stuck on singer Alice’s wonderful voice.  Regardless, this is a band I’m rather excited about at the moment, which probably isn’t that great a feat considering I’m a sucker for a nice melody.  You can also check a cool little performance video the band tossed out for this single HERE.
