Top Albums of 2021

Honestly, I’m pretty over lists at this point. They’re arbitrary and don’t really reflect anything but someone’s tastes, except here where they reflect the tastes of three individuals…because that’s how we roll. So, take this list with a grain of salt. These are the records we thought were the best, which mostly just means these are the ones we listened to on repeat throughout the year! Feel free to leave a comment on what you think we missed, or why we’re dumb; we love good comment trolls.

Also, because this list is really about crediting the art that made us happy, we wanted it to make you happy too, so we included purchasing links where we could. Read more

A Night Out: Small Black and Terry Malts

Hey, all. Catching up on sharing some show photos. Last Friday was an insanely busy night with bands like Real Estate, Small Black and Terry Malts headlining around The Red River Cultural District. It meant meeting different groups of friends and seeing more bands in one night that some people see all year. Don’t you feel sorry for them?

Bands in order of appearance – Nite, Talkies, Small Black, Business of Dreams, Hidden Ritual, Terry Malts.

So click through for some notes about dinner, drinks, bands and coughing fits with a nice big gallery.

Four New Music Videos You Should Peep

As we’re in the thick of spring, it seems like we’re approaching peak musical release time and, I know, sometimes it can be a little difficult to keep up with everything as it’s coming at you. Today, I’ve got three music videos that came out within the past week that you should watch/listen to, if you’re trying to stay relevant. They’re all a little different in terms of genre and style, but all worthy of your time, so strap in and let’s get rolling– check them out after the jump.

Show Pics: Small Black @ Sidewinder (10/16)

Small BlackThis was my first trip to The Sidewinder. For a “new” venue, things seemed pretty well sorted. We’ll have more on that in a bit.

Small Black headlined on release day for the new record, Best Blues. THeyh had a pretty strong showing last time through as part of SxSW, but I was really interested to hear the new songs as they are positioned as the break-through. New record, new tour, same nice people. ATH faves Painted Palms opened.

Show Preview: Small Black @ The Sidewinder

Date 10/16/15
Location The Sidewinder
Doors 8pm
Tickets $12 @ Que App

Friday is yet another busy evening in Austin, but if I were you (and I’m not), I’d head over the brand new Sidewinder for a great show by Small Black.  Making the show even more enticing for all you live music fans is the opener Painted Palms who will surely bring the jams.  Both of those bands on one bill for the low low price of only $12 is way too good to pass up.

Small Black Give Us Even More

unnamedIt’s been a busy year for Small Black and Team ATH has already shared two new singles from the band so we might as well go on and share a third.  This one is called “Back at Bells” and is yet again another gem sure to get you more fired up for the band’s new album.  What else is left to say really?

Don’t forget to pick up Best Blues on October 16th via Jagjaguwar.

Sleek Synth Pop For Dancing From Small Black

unnamed-5Not too long ago I shared with you this track from Brooklyn’s Small Black, and enjoyed the new release of pulsating synth pop from these established gentlemen. Once again, this four piece have returned to demonstrate their great knack for churning out killer synth pop tracks that not only makes you want to shake it, but also conjures some real human connection. In “No One Wants It To Happen To You,” once you press play, you know the band’s got something big in store for you; the sounds of the track all sort of loom quietly and begin to build gradually in the mix. They’ve got a new album called Best Blues  coming out October 16th on Jagjaguwar.

Get Down With Small Black

unnamed-2It’s a Thursday, so naturally you’re itching for the weekend to hurry up and get here already. What’s a better way to channel yourself into the weekend vibe other than some slick dance music? Small Black have got you covered there with this new single, “Boys Life,” which is taken from the band’s upcoming release, Best Blues, and is filled with enough synthesizer to let you make believe it’s Friday night already.  The track pretty much immediately launches into the groove, with a somewhat minimalist tone to it: though there’s a lot going on, the soundscape seems spacey other than the constant percussion blasting through in waves. Then the track really kicks into full swing and you really can’t help but shimmy along. Take a listen below and look out for Best Blues out October 16th from Jagjaguwar.

Show Pics: Washed Out @ The Mohawk (9/9)

Washed OutThis was pretty much a double headliner show for me. The first time I saw both of the bands that played last night at The Mohawk, Small Black and Washed Out, they played overlapping sets during a SxSW day party, the former backing the latter. Fast forward many years and we are reliving those glory days of buzz and free bandanas.

SOLD OUT!

Sweaty date-night dance party!
