Late to the Game: Fresh Hit from The Popguns

I was beginning to worry that one of our favorite purveyors of indiepop had gone too dormant, but as luck would have it, looks like Matinee Recordings have gotten their hands on another new album from the Popguns. The band has been going at it for thirty years, yet Wendy Morgan still has the pipes to make all those indiepop fans swoon; her performance here is definitely the star of the show. She turns melodies atop the band’s sharp jangles and steady beats, washing over you with emotion tugging notes. Look for Sugar Kisses, the new record, on June 14th.

Rachel from Field Mouse Records as Anomie

anomie-EP-coverOur friends over at Father/Daughter Records have had a busy week. The brought us the new Diet Cig track earlier this week, and now they’re bringing another catchy female-fronted pop track from Anomie, which is the recording project of Rachel of Field Mouse (no known relation to Field Mice!). This tune is a straight-ahead rocker; it’s the sort you just turn up to get some energy when you’re raring to go out. Her Anomie EP will be released by the label at the beginning of February (the 10th!), so if you just need a pick me up or a great song to send a friend, try this one on for size.

I’m Stuck on School

swedefishschoolSure. I went back to teaching this week, so technically, yes, I’m stuck on school.  But for this purpose, I’m talking about the delightful Swedish quartet, School (not to be confused with the School).  There’s just something super enchanting about the bounce kicked off by the snare work in conjunction with those surf-style guitar licks; or, maybe I’m also stuck on singer Alice’s wonderful voice.  Regardless, this is a band I’m rather excited about at the moment, which probably isn’t that great a feat considering I’m a sucker for a nice melody.  You can also check a cool little performance video the band tossed out for this single HERE.

Show Preview: Artist vs. Cancer @ The ND (10/27)

Date 10/27/11
Location The ND
Doors 8pm
Tickets $10 @ AvC Website

On Thursday night at the ND we’re helping sponsor a great show for a great cause to benefit the recently founded Artists Against Cancer foundation in Austin.  The show features local veterans Flametrick Subs headlining with up and comers and ATH homies Whitman and Guns of Navarone also on hand to fill out the bill.  All proceeds from the minimal door charge will be going directly to help those artists in need.  You should also take some time to read up about the foundation on their new website and check out fellow sponsors sites by Powerhouse Animation and Sonora Records.

UPDATE: Unfortunately Whitman have had to cancel the show and a search is out for a replacement.  Stay tuned for updates as we receive them.

Double UPDATE: Austin band So Long, Problems has stepped in to fill the void left by Whitman.  They will go on second after GoN.
