Royal Forest Share Sometimes Video

This Friday, Royal Forest will finally release their new album Waiting Drum; it feels like its been a long time coming, though that in part has to do with the band’s attention to detail in the process. This new LP, for instance, was recorded in a nearly century old farmhouse in Arkansas, which inevitably left its mark on the group’s sound. Digging through the latest single, I’m really impressed with the way they’ve created this dense lushness in their sound, with each note seemingly brimming with thoughtfulness; really love the song’s latter half where electronic textures are woven in and out. That said, the vocals help the group maintain a certain pop sensibility that makes their organic musical exploration accessible to even the pickiest of listeners. Post Punk Vibes from Mofer

Admittedly, I don’t know a whole heaping lot about Germany’s Mofer, but that doesn’t mean I can’t throw my support behind this great track off their forthcoming Ghosts EP. At They’ve got this wonderful post-punk sound, the kind that sort of just soars and carries you with it, attached on the wings of glorious guitar sounds. In a way, it really reminds me of the Black Watch, offering up these sort of heavy vocal tones that reach for the higher notes as guitars buzz behind them. At the same time, there’s this effortless bounce beneath the surface, encouraging toe-tapping and light bits of pogoing in place. I promise, this is right up your alley.

ATX Spotlight: Popper Burns On Dillo Milk 2 Comp

dillmilkIn an amazing year full of compilations in Austin, there’s another one ready to blast through your speakers: Dillo Milk 2. Popper Burns, one of the acts that we featured on our very own Slack Capital Comp will again be featured, bringing you a recording of their new song, “Sometimes;” it’s a personal favorite of their live set. I love the way the guitars cut through while the rhythm section kicks off a propulsive bounce all the way through. So many great Austin acts here, cementing my own personal opinion that despite the troubles, Austin’s scene can rival any of the other vital music scenes in the States. The release party for this CD comp is set for October 1 at Cheer Up Charlies; it’ll be available digitally on September 23rd for those outside city limits.

Chook Race: The Next Great Australian Act

chookraceWhile we’re constantly fawning over the Australian scene on our site, the country itself seems to continuously export great guitar pop…and we’re adding Chook Race to that list. The more I listen to this track, it’s the care taken to the guitar playing in the mix that really stands out in my ears, but I found myself hooked on something else entirely. Wait for the chorus, the most simplest moment…”bop, bop.” Monosyllabic phrases never sounded so enticing, so worthy of playing on repeat. Around the House is the title of the band’s new record, which will be released on September 2nd via Trouble in Mind Records.

New Ballad from Calm as the Colour

It’s a good thing I have some sort of lineage in Scotland, otherwise I’d feel sort of odd about the way I fawn over their musicians.  I’m pretty sure this is the second Scottish track I’ve posted this week, and I’m okay with that.  Calm as the Colour is a four-piece (again not from Glasgow), and I was completely caught off guard when I heard the work they’ve put in on their recent Tomorrow Belongs to a World Apart EP.  It’s got four great tracks, and this one in particular approximates my love of both loud guitars and tight-knit guitar-monies.  It’s a pretty pop ballad, and sometimes those do just the trick!
