Last Week’s Jams (6.3 – 6.7)

Pretty heavy week we had over on the ATH here. The Bay Area and Austin area had some great tunes to offer us, such as new stuff from Sad Eyed Beatniks and Holy Wire, or perhaps Swiftumz and Letting Up Despite Great Faults. We also got to preview some great shows like Adrianne Lenker and The Umbrellas (that was a blast btw!). Plus, Cursive return after a few years off, so of course the site’s emo contingent was keeping you up to date there. Then there were Nathan faves like Icarus Phoenix, Quivers and Azure Blue, all of whom offered us up new tunes. Tons to enjoy below.

Sour Widows Share Big Dogs

There’s a lot of immediacy in the music scene…two minute pop songs and what not…so it’s nice to hear an act like Sour Widows really stretching things out in their work. The final single before the released of Revival of a Friend has the group carefully crawling through the first two minutes, tip-toeing over guitar lines and soft drum pieces. Their ability to build tension has been perfected, as they unleash a smashing wall of noise that comes crashing right through at the 2:21 mark; it allows their soft notes to turn into a thundering burst that displays their ability to offer differentiation throughout their tunes. But, rest assured, just as they’ve battered your ears, they pull back the covers to offer some solace as the tune pulls to a close. Revival of a Friend is out June 28th via Exploding in Sound.

Sour Widows Share Staring Into Heaven/Shining

The forthcoming Revival A Friend is definitely on my list of records I’m looking forward to hearing in their entirety, and I’m glad there’s another Sour Widows musical sample to keep our eyes on the prize. This one is a musical journey unto itself, with the tune trickling in at the beginning; the vocals work quietly over a gentle guitar line, emotionally attaching the band and the listener as one. They carry you close, occasionally adding heavier work on the cymbals and riffs to punch up the volume, then pull us all back with a faint musical whisper. Then it all explodes, taking all the nuances and turning them into one broad moment of sweeping rock and roll that breaks into a jam for a few minutes. Explorative and rocking, just as I like it. Revival of a Friend is out June 28th via Exploding in Sound.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (7.18 – 7.22)

We got back to being super busy last week, with RayRay premiering that new No Win jam, plus a bunch of other new stuff that we were stoked to dive into. Good to see Free Time and Laura Jean back with new stuff, not to mention a little local love from the likes of First Names and Twain (he lives here!). All in all, its a bunch of stuff, all over the place musically, just like we do, so hopefully this kicks your Monday into gear!

Check Out Witness From Sour Widows

Bay area trio Sour Widows really made a name for themselves last year with the highly praised release of the four song EP Crossing Over. Now focused on an upcoming Fall tour, the band sent over a brand new single called “Witness” earlier today and it was just too good not to share with you all. This song can really take you on a musical and emotional journey through slow builds, super dramatic crescendos, and stunning harmonies packed into the nearly 6 minute song. The progression sort of reminds me of early Pedro songs with the deeply rewarding, intensely emotional builds after moments of melodic reservation. Ya dig.
