Don’t Sleep On This New Jenny Hval Tune

Forgive me if you’ve already heard this, but Jenny Hval has just announced a new EP and shared a tune off of that forthcoming release. Maybe I’m still reeling from the new age jazz that I experienced the other night by watching King Krule’s set at Emo’s, but “Spells” has certainly struck a chord with me that I felt was somehow missing in the past with Jenny Hval’s tunes. The moment you press play on the track, you’re greeted with some sick saxophone, which continues on as a motif through the number and delightfully compliments Hval’s vocals. Completely enchanting, the number blossoms into a jazzy, trancelike blend of dream pop. Make sure you check it out below and stay tuned for more tracks from Jenny Hval on her way to the release ofThe Long Sleep EP.

Rhythmic Electropop from Berdmajik

There’s a lot of blending and blurring of lines between genres nowadays, which has left us with some pretty refreshing tidbits of tunes. But, today I’m gravitating towards the playful wobble of Berdmajik, twisting bits of break-beats and sunny electropop, all backed by a disorienting vibe that pulses in the distance. There’s still a really polished dose of warm vocals drifting throughout, leaving listeners with a relaxed vibe that endures. Look for the project to drop the debut album, SPELLS, via Golden Brown on May 19th.

Another Track from The Pharmacy

Pharmacy-blog-534x380I’m really expecting this new album from The Pharmacy to catch a lot of ears, especially considering that I felt their first album, Stoned and Alone, was vastly underrated.  This brand new single has a slower pace to it, which illustrates the band’s growth since their first release.  The guitars are taking their time, weaving a world of country-tinged chords that allow for the vocals to really take in all the focus.  If you’re a fan of Natural Child, then Spells will definitely be something to look forward to; it’s being released by Old Flame Records on August 12th.

Old Flame Records On a Roll This Summer

oldflameIt’s always great to see the success of labels that have worked diligently to foster acts they love, and that’s why I’m really impressed with the work of our friends over at Old Flame Records.  Next week they release the much anticipated Dead Stars LP, Slumber, but they’ve also got some other great things in the working.  They’ve got a new single from Shark?, which is this great instrumental jam that’s perfect to fit into the middle of your road trip mix tape.  Then, they’re working on the next release from The Pharmacy; they’re album Spells will be out on August 12th, and it’s definitely a jamming type record, filled with rock n’ roll swagger.  Take a listen to the two respective singles from each band below, “Big Summer” by Shark? and “Masten Lake Lagoon” by the Pharmacy; keep an eye on Old Flame.

SXSW Watchlist: Happy Hollows

happyholowsWhen talking about L.A. band Happy Hollows, it’s all about lead singer and primary songwriter Sarah Negahdari.  She’s been called many things like “one of the coolest women of rock” by Wired magazine and a “rock goddess” by The Huffington Post.  All of these tags being fully deserved as evidenced by her intense and energy packed live shows.  No slouches themselves, band-mates Charlie Mahoney and Chris Hernandez joined up in 2006 to form the 3 piece band after Negahdari had done mostly open mic nights for several years.  Coming into 2010, The Happy Hollows just released their debut LP Spells to mostly positive reviews.  I expect these guys to bring some rock n roll to our SXSW festival in these times with rock bands gettin’ more and more mellow.  Stay tuned for details on shows during SXSW week featuring Happy Hollows.
