Summer Flake Return with Stranger Single

It’s been several years since we’ve heard from Aussie outfit Summer Flake, but we’re all being rewarded today with a brand new single and the hope that more is on the horizon. A light little strum drew me into this tune, offering a sort of musical ray of sunshine that could slide right into any moment in your life. The vocals feel equally as light, and in a sense, almost dreamily playful, riding the mix like a white knight on a glorious stallion of melody. To me, there’s something super sweet in its simplicity, and I can’t help but appreciate every moment of this tune; here’s to hoping we get more. Track out today courtesy of Rice is Nice!

NOV3L Share Stranger Single

There’s just something about the nostalgic re-envisioning that NOV3L are working with as they prep the release of their new LP, Non-Fiction. Soft piano notes set the listener up, before the band gets rather frantic due to the sharp vocal delivery; I love how the piano sticks around, adding a bit of discord to the sound. The more the song unfolds, the more you get little glimmers of pop melody seeping through; they’re small moments, but when you’re gifted this incredible little rhythm section on a tune, you take what you can get! The band release Non-Fiction next Friday, May 28th.

New Stuff from Jess Ribeiro

Late last year, before we started dropping all that list nonsense, Jess Ribeiro released a new tune; she’s back again with another new track/video for you. This tune has a sort of cosmic pop vibe, one that seems build for those drives from Texas through into the dusty horizons heading out West. Ribeiro’s voice has this nice smokiness to it, which only furthers that meandering vibe of the music that pulsates just beneath her. She hasn’t released a full length since 2015, but these last two powerhouse singles are incredible, so maybe there’s still hope 2019 will see a new Jess release…though is she’s stoked to just drop great track after great track, I’ll be here listening.

New Music from Former Bullies

First off, congrats to the lads at CF Records for celebrating 10 years (I should hope to be as lucky). Now, they’ve just announced the brand new Former Bullies LP as their first release of 2017, and this first tune’s a hit! This offering has remnants of the Television Personalities, though they seem a bit tighter here on this number, though still bringing in doses of pop and devil-may-care attitude. The album is said to reference the ending of a 10-year relationship, so if heartbreak and moving forward are your thing, then you’ll want to keep your ears peeled for more music from these guys. Look for the record on February 24th.

New Instrumental Jam from Balmorhea

So I’ve been hitting you in the face with rock n’ roll today, so perhaps I should pull it back a little.  Good thing this great Balmorhea track is cleared to post.  It’s an interesting listen, really giving you two different songs in one, but that’s what we’ve come to appreciate about one of Austin’s most revered acts.  I love the way the song slowly inches its way along, then with the lightest of switches, the guitar picks up a touch, the percussion moves in, and the song begins to move in a faster direction–they continue going off in this fashion as only they can. If you dig this, you can pick up the band’s new record, Stranger, on Western Vinyl October 2nd.
