Fuck Yeah, More New Communions

front_digiMan, this Communions band has me excited for things to come.  The band blends some of that discordant dance music with 80s pop tropes.  It’s something that has the potential to carry on for a long time, especially considering that the oldest member of the band is only 21.  As of now, the tunes are good; they’re catchy, they show the spirit of the band.  Personally, I hope to see some growth, sonically, maybe taking some risks with the sound.  But, for now I’m hooked on the act, which makes their forthcoming self-titled EP quite intriguing; it’s available on June 2nd via Tough Love.

In Love with New Flesh World

fleshalmeshI love the forlorn vocals that open the latest single from Flesh World.  When it meets the darkened edges of the guitar sounds, it’s like a calling into the ghostly post-punk realm the band have created with this tune here.  Still, there’s an undercurrent that warms the ears of the listeners, especially around the 1.5 minute mark where the chant of “poolside boys” comes crashing in. If you enjoy some shredding cacophony to drown out the noisy typer next to your cubicle, then look for The Wild Animals in My Life via Iron Lung Records on June 2nd.

ATX Spotlight: Twin Bitches Do It Right

11174497_942951285737062_3480207812902951185_oBeen helping a friend put together a show this week over at Mohawk on Thursday night, and in doing so, I encountered a new band, Twin Bitches that’s really exciting.  Based on their two singles, the band has sort of that post-punk Constantines feeling to them, using jagged guitar chops to push forth the lyrics, which come across somewhere between a throaty growl and a gentle croon.  Musically, you can see similarities to other indie acts, but combined, it sounds like something wholly different. They’ll be playing with two of our favorite local acts, SLOW and Jonly Bonly…so come out, grab a drink, jam out and enjoy some of the finer rock n’ roll tunes in town. Doors are at 9, but you can always come hang out early.

Bonus Elliot Moss Single

emoElliot Moss released his quiet masterpiece, Highspeeds, digitally today (though we won’t be able to get our hands on physical copies until May 5th), and if you grabbed that version, you’ll be treated to this exclusive bonus track.  I think the tune highlights Elliot’s gifts, displaying the fragility in his voice, carefully resting atop the mixture of constructed layers.  There’s so many fine touches throughout the album that this song seems to fit perfectly into the overall concept he’s unleashed.  There’s some streams of the whole record out there, but we wanted to treat you to this special tune he’s offered to his fans.

Nice Little Tune from Diamond Youth

diamondzI wanted to find some tunes this week that really put some rock n’ roll back on our pages, but it’s been fairly hard in all honesty.  This track from Diamond Youth comes relatively close, but there’s still this soft underbelly that lurks beneath the pop sensibility of the tune itself. The guitars definitely have a powerful ring, but you’ll be able to see the band twist the knife into your heart by offering something with a central melody. You’ll be able to get more of a feel of the band when their debut album, Nothing Matters, reaches the masses on May 19th via Topshelf Records.

Uplifting Pop from Little Children

littleWe all need a little pick me up, and for many of us, that’s best when it comes to moving music.  Some people look for a hard edge to get out their pent-up aggression, but others, like myself, look for the perfect pop song to really bring my spirits up to par.  This new track from Little Children has really done its job since it came out a few days ago; I’m particularly fond of the raspy quality in the vocals.  It’s no surprise that this is a collective from Sweden as the style fits the soft pop that’s been popularized in the country since we were able to invade their musical landscape.  You can find the song on the band’s Traveling Through Darkness EP, which comes out on June 2nd.

Album of the Week: Fever Dream

11112865_874968955878246_5594096018965500004_oI figured I’d pick a record that came out this week and give some love to a deserving LP that might not otherwise be on your radar.  This tune from Fever Dream‘s been floating around for me for some time, and their album Moyamoya is every bit as enjoyable as the tune below.  There’s an earnestness to the songwriting, whilst still giving a nostalgic nod at the forebears of shoegaze movements.  Remember when the Pains of Being Pure at Heart was all you could listen to after their first album? Well, then meet your next love…it’ll be great this week and beyond.

Riotous New Single from Total Babes

babesYou’re going to hear some soft vocals in this track from Total Babes, sitting back behind the mix, but the guitar work here is what’s really going to get a hold of you.  From the minute you press play on the link, the guitars have that discordant ring to them, driving the song forward forcefully.  That being said, I appreciate the quieted approach of the vocals; it sets the song up in a different manner than one might expect, allowing for fans to find moments where they sing-a-long euphorically. Look to hear all of the band’s Heydays on May 19th when it’s released by Wichita Recordings.

Dance-ateria Types on Blast with Most People

Stay Forever CoverLooking to kick off your Tuesday with some frivolous synth pop tunes? Well, listen up, you’re not going to find a better one out there today than Most People‘s newest single.  The Toronto duo have crafted this tune, clearly intent on pushing you to the dance floor; they even pause for a touch of respite in the middle of the tune so you can run to the bar and grab a drink.  You’ll have a hard time denying the hooks here, and who would want to, after all.  Sometimes you just wanna say fuckall and go have some fun…this is the tune that leads you there.

Missed This Tune from Fire/Works

firewerksFor the first minute and a half of this new single from Fire/Works, you’ll probably get lost in the wilderness of their intricate folk stylings, emphasizing the harmonies and the gentle quiet in the world.  But, for a brief moment, they bring in percussion, rolling the song into a folk-pop masterpiece, only to bring it back to the solemn ballad where it originated. They move back and forth between the two moments, which will leave listeners of the genre quite pleased.  You’ll find this song on the band’s Shenanigans album.
