Austin Spotlight: Letting Up Despite Great Faults Return

10336826_10154252742045122_4351492479774252113_nWe here at ATH have always stood behind Letting Up Despite Great Faults.  They blend shoegaze and indiepop, and it’s always done quite successfully.  Their last album, Untogether, was one of our favorite a few years back, and now they’re set to return with Neon.  One thing you’re likely to notice is that singer Mike Lee has allowed Annah Fisette to play a larger role in the vocal performance, as evidenced by this first single; her voice definitely is the perfect counterpart to Lee’s vocals.  It all makes forms an infectious blend of pop music that’s sure to warm the band’s fans, and gain new followers.  They’ll be releasing their album on August 12th, including a show at Holy Mountain on the 16th that we’re proud to sponsor.  Pop doesn’t get much better than this.

Fresh Music from Laetitia Sadler

laetitiaI’m really enjoying the newest single from Laetitia Sadler; there’s something in the inflection as she sings that really grabs me.  There’s a bit of oddity to it, though it’s able to grab hold of melody at the same time.  It reminds me of the much misses Deep Time, though the music has more of a singer-songwriter aspiration, albeit one that’s maximized by strings and horns.  This song will feature on her new record, Something Shines, which is slated for release on September 23rd via Drag City Records.  It also doesn’t hurt that she was a big part of Stereolab either, does it?

Playful Pop from The History of Apple Pie

10482251_815886028444018_7063523095313571855_oKeyboards and synchronized drums open the track before Samantha Min joins in the fray.  It’s a solid backbone that provides a playful introduction on the newest single from The History of Apple Pie. They stay in the same gear for the duration of the track, interrupted from time to time by a shimmering guitar line that echoes faintly in the background.  It’s a song that wins listeners over with its simple approach to writing catchy pop tunes, and there’s likely to be more of that when the group release their second album, Feel Something, on September 30th via Marshall Teller Records.

King Tuff Returns with New Album

King Tuff Band PhotoIt hasn’t been too long since King Tuff‘s last record, but he’s back with new jams…and maybe a little bit of a new spin.  This new track starts off almost in a classic rock manner, and then moves into his standard fare.  But, around the 1.40 minute mark, the song turns into a progressive jam moment.  It makes sense reading the new page on Sub Pop, who will be releasing the album.  It talks about battled between God and the Devil, and fire obsessions…yet the heart of it all still are hooks.  Tuff can do whatever he wants, as long as he keeps those hooks.  We’ll find out on September 23rd, when Black Moon Spell hits stores.

Rock Out with Christian Fitness

christianChristian Fitness is the new project of Andrew from Future of Left, so you’ll likely recognize the sound of the act.  The guitar work and the vocal delivery are quite similar, which means you’ll also hear similarities to McClusky…all these are good things I promise.  The title of the work is I’m Scared of Everything That Isn’t Me; you’ll love the weaving in and out of those jagged guitar lines and loose bouncing drum beats.  Andy’s releasing it on his own Prescriptions Music label, and it’s slated for a release in the next few weeks.

Rural Alberta Advantage Return with New Album

mendThe last Rural Alberta Advantage album, Departing, still plays quite frequently in my rotation of millions of albums.  There’s something about the band’s combination of folk-influenced rock and Nils Edenloff’s vocals that just gets in my soul, refusing to ever let go of it’s stranglehold on my ears. This song has the band opening softly, just for a moment, before the group blasts off with this pummeling roll of the drums and gang vocals from Edenloff and Amy Cole; the rest is about as good as it gets. Look for their album, Mended with Gold, on September 30th via Saddle Creek.

So Cow Sign with Goner Recrods

cowsI’m so stoked for the Irish lads in So Cow; I’ve been listening to the group for several years, and they never seemed to quite make headway in the US…until news came yesterday that they’d signed with Goner Records.  Their new single has this jerky guitar line that moves in and out of the tune, pumping the distortion during the chorus.  They’ve always been catchy, but they walk this fine line of power-pop cum garage rock; it’s all illustrated in this single.  Their album, The Long Con, will be released on September 16th, but if you’re liking what you hear, check out Meaningless Friendly, my personal favorite.

Foxes in Fiction Return with Great Tune

foxesThis track hit right before the holiday weekend, so I hadn’t had a chance to put it up yet, despite knowing that it’s one of the best songs I’ve heard this summer.  The song has this lush production, taking warbling tape and orchestration and building it into this effortless swell of pop.  It’s no surprise, however, as Foxes in Fiction have been making such breathtaking music for some time.  This is one of the seven tracks that’ll be featured on the group’s new album, Ontario Gothic, which is being released on the increasingly reliable Orchid Tapes in September.

New Music from Soft Swells

softFeel like today is a good day to listen to great pop tunes, helping to revitalize my booze infused body after a long weekend.  This new track that just came in from Soft Swells is doing just the right trick, filling the speakers with polite harmonies.  The track grabs you immediately, opening with vocals that carefully wait for the rolling drums to carry them the rest of the way.  It’s the first single from the band’s new album, Floodlights, which will see a September 30th release from our friends over at Modern Outsider.  Enjoy your listen.

Lush New Music from Musee Mecanique

museeOrchestral rock music is my jam! Okay, not all of it, obviously, but I’m really enjoying this track from Musee Mecanique; it reminds me an awful lot of the sort of music being created by current Portland residents, Other Lives.  The opening to this tune trickles in carefully, with intricately picked guitar strings and a floating vocal. However, the tune gradually progresses, with a rolling drum bit and increased volume, as well as instrumentation.  It’s quite a startling piece of work, which makes the announcement of their new album, From Shores of Sleep, even better; it’ll be out on Tender Loving Empire come August 26th.
