Pleased to Meet You: Alluvial Nuggets Premiere Codeine

Those of you in the know will surely recognize James Dutton’s name as a member of both Flywheel and the Cannanes, but as of 2020, he’s been working on his new project, Alluvial Nuggets. We’re told there’s an album on the horizon, with our first sample coming via this film shot by James himself on an iPhone 7, much to the chagrin of his family. Musically, there’s something so calming about the delivery of Dutton’s vocals; they faintly remind me of Jeff Tweedy, particularly when the striking string arrangements bend around each syllable. Within the confines, you’ll find some joyful moments that will clearly resonate; I particularly love the monosyllabic hums that begin around the 1:33 mark. And, while things seem fairly melancholic, there’s a pronounced stomp and excursion in the tune’s latter half, perhaps hinting that we have no idea what we can expect when this whole record drops next year. What we do know is we’ll be listening thanks to Lost and Lonesome; they’ll keep us posted on the LP next year!

Have You Listened to Broadway? Indiepop Fans Should!

I’m always striving to find things that need to be unearthed, and that’s why I’m bringing you Broadway today…a Melbourne three-piece in need of your ears. But, that being said, the members of this band should be known to you pop fans…ties to the Cannanes and Slight of Build should be enough to pique your interest. I’m posting the standout tune, a settled pop tune with perfect male/female vocal interplay. There’s just that slight circular guitar ring/jangle that we all adore (or at least I do), but the song’s aren’t hurried, allowing for the melodies to wash over you. Look for the debut album from the trio now from Emotional Response.

Dusken Lights Release New Video

Dusken Lights came into my radar via a loose connection to The Cannanes (who are reissuing their first album via Chapter Music!). But, while this song definitely will offer up pop sensibility, it’s more in the vein of folk traditions. The video is filled with quick images of the world, both beautiful and dark. In the song you should listen carefully for the touches that work behind the front of the mix, maximizing the song’s emotion…matched by the video’s imagery. This song is our first listen from the band’s forthcoming LP, The Service of Spring, which comes out on September 30th.

Classic Aussie Pop from The Cannanes Gets ReIssued!

cannanesEveryone that adores indiepop, or Aussie tunes, should now stand up and clap for Chapter Music. The Australian label are reissuing A Love Affair with Nature from the Cannanes; they aren’t settling there, as the new reissue is a picture disc, new liner notes, and a collection of bonus tracks from the early singles. Listening now, you’ll probably realize that the band’s mark is omni-present in much of the indiepop of today, which just goes to show how timeless the songs from that album truly are. Probably your first chance to get your hands on the LP version since the 90s, unless you’re getting luck with Discogs or Ebay, so grab your copy on September 16th.

Welcome Back: The Cannanes

cannanesAfter more than a decade, we are happy to see that The Cannanes are fully back with a brand new full-length.  They teased us recently with an EP, but now they’ve announced Howling at All Hours will be released by our really good friends over at Chapter Music.  I’ve always appreciated the vocal delivery in their songs, which sort of remind of the way Ian Dury delivered his lyrics, although The Cannanes seemed to have a little bit more sensibility, employing backing lyrics to add a balance. You can get your copy at your local store on July 5th, adding to the great releases by Chapter this year (see Dick Diver).
