Pleased to Meet You: Eerie Family

I was a big fan of Austin’s Hex Dispensers, and it looks like Alex and Alyse are ready to move forward with their new project, Eerie Family. The duo quietly released their new self-titled album on Tuesday, and while there are sonic similarities, particularly Alex’s voice, there’s some really beautiful moments I don’t want you to ignore. For instance, “A Ghost Who Lives Inside Your Heart” is stunning; it leaves all sorts of empty space in the track, though that’s filled with various sonic flourishes, almost like a more indie rock version of Magnetic Fields. Other tracks like “A Crooked Path” give Alyse the starring vocal role, switching up the mood just a touch. It’s a wonderfully brooding listen, and one I suggest you hop on right away!

So your Valentines Day might be kind of a bummer, but if you can hold out until Tuesday, we’ve got something that’s just going to blow you away, forcing you smile. That’s right, a man in a bunny mask!  Emos is hosting the return of Nobunny, touring in support of his recent release, First Blood.  You’re guaranteed to get drenched in sweat, pogo about, and leave feeling great about yourself after the set.  And, you can get a glimpse of some of the great rocking bands from Austin, as opening acts Hex Dispensers and Simple Circuit are two bands that really deserve a whole lot more love than they seem to have gotten here in town.  So go out, support your local bands, and just have an all-around good time.  Oh, and if you have an extra bunny mask, you might want to offer it up, as Nobunny was looking a little ratty last time around.

Okay, you have to go to this.  First, The Hex Dispensers are one of the great bands in Austin, and I think they’ve been vastly overlooked.  It’s cool, you totally have the chance to make up for it.  Then, you can also catch opening act King Tuff, who’s been around for a bit kicking out the garage-y jams.  He recently put out a record with some friends as Happy Birthday, so if you remember that, you remember it being pretty solid.  And, you want the icing on your cupcake? It’s absolutely FREE, all you have to do is RSVP.  So, to recap, you get awesome tunes, and you don’t have to free. No excuses.  Here’s a track from Happy Birthday to get you in the mood.

Ty Segall @ Emos (8/7)

Date Saturday, August 7th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from TicketWeb

This has already been one crazy week for shows, and we’ve got another excellent show lined up for you Saturday night, at least for those on the heavier side of things.  Ty Segall is coming to town in support of his new record , Melted, which came out awhile back.  It’s destined to be a glorious night of fast paced punk rock with a solid line-up backing up Ty while he’s in town.  Not only will you get to see Ty unleash some fury, but you’ll also get to see Royal Baths, The Hex Dispensers, Charlie and the Moonhearts, and A Giant Dog.  Looks like a great night to skip the heat and catch these great acts in the cool Emos indoor air.
