Last Week’s Jam’s Today (2.28 – 3.4)

Last week was one of those weeks where I wanted to write about all the songs; Ryan crushed it with tons of SXSW interviews, letting you get to know the likes of Best Move, Coyle Girelli, No Swoon and more. So, we’ve got to go back and give you a quick list of all the jams, and there were tons! You had new stuff from Austinites Friday Boys, Bright Light Social Hour and Wiretree, then Neutrals and Mick Love made my weekend with hits at the end of the week. There’s tons to browse through here, so go check it out.

The Minders Release Psychedelic Backdrop

I wonder how one of the bands that sprang out of the early Elephant 6 era could completely miss my radar when they dropped a new release! I aim to rectify that by sharing the Minders newest release in streaming form below. As the title alludes, there’s tons of psychedelic nods throughout, though I’ll be frank, as the album feels a lot sunnier and poppy than you might be led to believe. For example, listen to “Let’s Go Driving!,” which feels like a reimagined Dead tune, spun with sunshine and hooks. Of course, there’s also the more sullen vibes you get on “Astoria,” though I’m a sucker for the buoyant hooks of “Magic Anorak.” If you’re looking for classic indie pop sounds, then dive into Psychedelic Backdrop.

More Music from The Minders

mindersMan, as The Minders new album nears, I’m finding myself getting more and more psyched to get my hands on the physical version (and the rest of the songs). This track, their ‘break-up’ song, hits hard from the start. It’s not unlike the hits you get from GbV, but this time, with only more hooks and better production. There’s even a bit of a Buddy Holly hiccup in the vocal performance, which for us Texans, is like ear candy. Into the River is the title of the new record, which will come via Space Cassette on September 9th.

Brand New Tune from The Minders

mindersThose of you with an ear for the Elephant 6 brand should have heard of the Minders, but don’t think of the band as the second-coming of NMH. I like to think of the band as a more extravagant pop band, akin to the greats of indiepop. The songs, like the one below, are filled with undeniable melodies, but they’re fleshed out with strings and production that elevate each track. The band are set to release a new album, Into the River, via Space Cassette Records on September 9th.
