Honestly, I thought about foregoing a year-end list this year. I mean, if you read our site, you know what we love. But, list making can be fun, especially if you really really love music. My criteria was simple, and not based on what I think is “best,” but rather looking at the stuff I listened to the most, and eventually bought (or was gifted). Popular locals for my Nathan Wrapped have me living on an island in between San Francisco and Australia; label of the year would be Trouble in Mind (congrats to Bill and family!); genre would be: most awesome. Again, this is one man’s personal tastes, take it for what its worth.

The Tubs Share Wretched Life Single

Having covered the previous singles from the Tubs, I wasn’t totally sold on this new one until I caught the write-up from Stereogum, as they’re always the gatekeepers of cool. So, I jumped right onto that ship, and here we are, with another great track from the group. Having spent a lot of time with bands like The Black Watch, this tune’s right up my alley; it sounds like the soundtrack to a dance put on by the school’s local Dungeon’s and Dragons Club. It’s got a little goth tinge to it, though the guitar licks still remain absolutely sharp, even boisterous for brief bursts. Their album Dead Meat is out on January 27th via Trouble in Mind Records.

If your one of the seven people that hit up our site regularly (thanks mom!), then you might notice a title change. Nothing big, but just dropped a word because I was tired of pretending to be too clever. I’m not. Alas, we are still out here covering as much music as we have time for, and still trying to figure out how to incorporate the TMZ style drama that makes the cool sites so popular. So, for me, last week had some highlights I was pretty stoked upon; I got to hear solid returns from Lust for Youth and Jackie Mendoza, not to mention another brilliant electropop goodie from Das Kope. We got the announcement of new Julian Never, Galore and Blue Lawyer LPs, which should make everyone in the Bay Area proud. Plus there’s a great show preview/review from J.Wags on Golden Dawn Arkestra, so be sure to check out his work!

The Tubs Share Dead Meat Single

As if the Tubs hadn’t made a statement with their debut EP, it looks like their new album for Trouble in Mind is going to take their sound to the next level. Today’s new single is this quick gasoline fueled punch, or so it might seem at first. When the song first spits out of your speakers, the tune rushes in, offering a sort of matter of fact lecture via the vocal delivery. But, while the guitars ring with a coated jangle, a new vocal decides to bring in a more concrete melody, accented by this little guitar noodling in this crystalline manner. A nice new jam for your Wednesday; Dead Meat will be out on January 27th.

It’s strange. Last week, I was complaining that the tunes were drying up as its nearing the end of the year. And here we are, RayRay and I getting a solid 20 songs up, plus interviews and coverage of Levitation. Guess we crushed it, along with our friend JWagner, who gave us some solid Babe Rainbow coverage. Personally, of all the tracks I loved last week, that Heather Trost tune is just a flat out star; I need ya’ll to get behind me on this! Our Aussie friends in Deuce also dropped us a new ditty, plus we got a new Tubs announcement out there. Tune in and let us know what you’re loving.

The Tubs Announce Dead Meat

Having been a huge fan of their previous acts, side projects, not to mention grabbing the Names EP, it seems only fitting that I squeeze out a few quick words between passing periods on the Tubs. Today the band announce their debut LP, Dead Meat, slated for a release in January of next year via our faves Trouble in Mind. There’s a definite post-punk vibe on the guitar work, recalling acts like Omni and Deeper, though they’ve mixed up the formula to meet it on their own terms, brandishing a melodic little treat in the middle. All of this makes sense if you remember some of the pop moments coursing through Joanna Gruesome pieces, as the songwriters have always had an affinity for hooks. Kind of feels like they’re taking a little Talking Heads meets noisier post-punk approach, and I’m totally here for it. Dead Meat drops on January 23rd!

The Tubs Announce Names EP

While the Tubs will most likely draw you in due to their association (and participation for that matter) in the now defunct Joanna Gruesome, don’t line up thinking you’ll get some brand of rehash for your time! Instead, they’re looking back on the great sounds that have informed so many of us: the obscurity of mid-80s guitar pop. Right up front you have those guitar licks, chopping up the song with sharp notes and ringing jangles, all bobbing along the tops of a steady rhythmic pulse. You can hear a love for Felt in the way the vocals have this softness, contrasted pleasantly against the anxiousness of the song’s push. Even more fitting is that the band find themselves a home on Trouble in Mind Records for the release of their Names EP, which will drop this July!
