Last Week’s Jams (3.3 – 3.7)

Sure, we’ve had our eyes on SXSW as of late, but there were so many great songs coming out, we had to hustle to be sure we got to as many as possible. We covered new stuff from the Gotobeds and Reds, Pinks and Purples, plus we got to highlight longtime favorites like The High Water Marks and Exploding Flowers, just to name a few. We had some quick SXSW interviews with Cloth, Snacktime, Last Waltzon, Two Man Giant Squid and Saint Blonde, so all get a little feature loved today, along with the rest of the weekly bangers. Dive on into the collection below.

Tunde Adebimpe Shares God Knows

Perhaps it’s because we spent so much of our young adulthood listening to TV on the Radio singles, but any time I hear a song featuring Tunde Adebimpe I’m immediately transported to a place of happiness (which we all need right now!). That said, his new solo LP is starting to shape up like a really thoughtful blend of pop. In the opening minutes, he has you, letting his lyrics hang and fall on the last piece of each poetic line, setting up the tune to have a subtle bounce atop a quiet piano line. It’s his delivery there that’s really exciting, particularly the way he uses syllables to create an extra beat and layer of texture. Still, the pop sensation comes with a bite to it, as the whole song uses the refrain “God knows you’re the worst thing I ever loved,” commenting on the reflections of heartbreak. The Black Boltz is out on April 18th via Sub Pop.

Last Week’s Jams (1.27 – 1.31)

Well, the year’s fully in swing, as evidenced by the ridiculous amount of music we got to listen to, though we only managed to write about a mere 25+ tracks and albums. I’ll cop to the fact that the end of the week was the highlight, hitting with a new Lone Striker single on the same day we got The Laughing Chimes album out there. Buffet Lunch continued to flex their musicianship, while the Rishis offered a brand single from their next LP. New Tunde Adebimpe and La Securite had us on the trends, but in the end, I was just glad to hear new stuff from our friends in Seasonal Falls. What will be your favorite jam of last week?

Tunde Adebimpe Shares Drop

Tunde Adebimpe is a sort of “can do no wrong” type of musician in my personal musical library of artists, albums and songs. He has been busy recently with a mini TV on the Radio reunion and also dropping the ATH year end list banger “Magnetic” a couple of months ago. Kick it to 2025, and Tunde is drastically improving my outlook on this year with the release of another new tune, “Drop,” found below. It’s giving off a more mellow vibe to it, with some slight hints of Seeds R&B, meets soul beats. I’m all in.

This track is part of the new Tunde Adebimpe album entitled Thee Black Boltzwhich is due out April 18th via Sub Pop Records. Pre-orders are live now.

The Cloak Ox Release New Single

shootthedogI think if you mention the name of Tunde Adebimpe of TVOTR then people are going to immediately get excited.  But, I think that’s probably not entirely fair to the Cloak Ox; their latest single is beautiful on its own, right down to the last detail. The percussive element has tribal roots, although I think the vocals and the rest of the song definitely have hints of Dirty Projectors construction within the walls.  It’s all made up for an interesting sound that should help you take your mind into the weekend.  The band’s debut album, Shoot the Dog, will be out on September 17th via Totally Gross National Product.
