Delightful Tune from Rebel Kind

rebelkindUp until now, the tunes that Rebel Kind have let loose, in regards to their new album at least, have been fairly energetic. On the title track from Just for Fools, the band illustrates that the group can channel any spirit animal, and for my ears, I hear them channelingthe greats like Hatfield or Sandoval (intentional or not). Those of you looking for something soothing, yet ultimately cool, will find that this new tune is refreshing…giving us the guarantee that the new record is more than just a one trick pony. Guess we’ll all find out on December 16th when Urinal Cake Records release it!

Catchy Ditty from Rebel Kind

rebelkindWhen I listen to this Rebel Kind single, there’s all kinds of things racing through my mind. I love the lineage to indiepop, especially withthe ramshackle jangling of the guitars letting the vocals hand on each note. There’s also a similar sound to that popularized by Alvvays, so you know that’s going to win over everyone here at our offices. In the end, it’s just a fun tune that gives a little vibrance to the world that surrounds us…and we all need that. Look for the group’s brand new LP, Just for Fools, when it’s released on December 16th via Urinal Cake Records.

Laid Back Rocker From Stef Chura

12247971_1672787559654622_1822489805624074009_oStef Chura, out of Detroit, is an act you need to keep an eye out for. She’s got that perfect blend of slackerpop and rock with a hint of power vocals to round the mix out nicely. “You,” starts and you are reminded immediately of The Cranberries– mellow grunge guitars create this almost sinister sounding atmosphere, while Chura’s vocals are twangy but a definite force to be reckoned with. It’s a lovely laid back rocker that slowly transitions to outright jam.

Her debut record, Messes, will be out in a few months on January 27th via Urinal Cake Records.

Austin Spotlight: New Album from John Wesley Coleman (+Release Shows)

johnnyIf you haven’t caught a John Wesley Coleman gig living in Austin, then perhaps you’re doing it all wrong.  Or, maybe you just caught The Golden Boys instead.  Either way, he’s one of my favorite local songwriters, unfortunately dubbed by many as a trashcan-troubadour. On his new single there’s a really striking fragility to his vocal performance, which I haven’t heard from him before…though I quite like it.  The rest of the track is filled with his trademark guitar stylings and blasts from his companion horn section.  You’ll be able to grab this new song on a 7″ from Urinal Cake Records soon, and catch him at Trailer Space on Thursday or Hotel Vegas on Saturday night where he’ll also have a new record for you too! Yeah Wes.
