The Sour Notes Return with New Single

Our friends in The Sour Notes are currently working on the finishing touches for their forthcoming Middle Distance LP, and while we wait, they’ve filled in the musical gap with three brand new tunes for your ears. For my two cents, the band definitely feel like they’re perfecting their blend of noisier indie rock that has a tendency to bleed into a dreamier realm; think the folks in Guided by Voices covering Galaxie 500. Texas music fans get an added music treat, as 2 of the 3 tunes here feature additional vocals from Lauren Eddy of ATH faves El Lago. The A side delivers that rocking punch, while the B side delivers that pensive tune you’ve been seeking. Spend some time with our friends today, and if you’re in California, keep an eye out for a few shows at the end of May!

Friday Album Streams: Ribbon Stage, the Smashing Times, Junior Boys + More

Lots of albums dropping just in time to make the year end lists, and here’s my favorites that came our way this week. I mean, we’ve already raved and raved about Ribbon Stage, which actually came out last week, but I was late on that game. Plus, I Was a King and the Smashing Times both have new records out that should be on their way to my house. No need for much to do, but here’s our faves.

Junior Boys Announce Waiting Game; Share Night Walk Vid

It’s been a handful of years since we last heard from Junior Boys, and in that time, a lot has happened to us all. So, as you’ll hear, things have changed for the band too, moving from their beat-driven vibes to a more contemplative realm. The opening moment almost feels like its going to drop in a huge hook…and that likely would be okay, but they switch it on us. The song opens up, studying the genre, toying with pace and our expectations. Many will likely draw soundtrack comparisons, but in this presentation, it feels purposeful, almost meditative, allowing listener to bathe in the composition. Looking forward to hearing what the rest of their new album, Waiting Game, has to offer us all; it drops on October 28th via City Slang.
