Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster Goes Solo

unnamed (3)Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster has made a name for himself over the last several years as the primary songwriter, singer, and guitar player for indie rock band Water Liars. With all of his success as part of a band, Kinkel-Schuser has decided to step out on his own for a bit and take a shot at recording and performing as a solo musician. The first taste of his new material was offered up yesterday with this new single “Headed South”. It’s downright beautiful and features a sort of melancholic, yet sill somehow bright take on the songwriter genre.

SXSW Superlatives: RayRay

Young BuffaloIt’s always a struggle to get back to work after over a week of play time.  Reminiscing helps ease the sleepy eyes and doldrums so lets have another look back at the awesome week of music that was.  Nathan kicked us off yesterday with some fine observations and I’ll continue the opinions today about the SXSW music week.  Follow the jump for my awards.

New Reverb Rock From Water Liars

I’m glad that the new year is finally upon us because it means that the quality new tracks start to roll in one after the other.  This new jam “Fake Heat” from Water Liars is one of the many new tunes we ATH kids are enjoying as of late.  It’s a reverb laden slow rock number that’s reminiscent of Band of Horses, Will Johnson, or even our very own locals Black Books.  Stick around till the end of the song when duo members Justin Kinkel-Schuster and Andrew Bryant team up for an incredible two part vocal harmony.

New Music from Water Liars

As soon as this song kicks off, you’re looking at a sludgy rock track, right? Well, push forward a little bit, and you’ll find yourself tapping your feet to this great folk jam.  Water Liars (formerly Phantom Limb) is the name of the group comprised of friends sharing some camaraderie between Missouri and Mississippi, and they’ll be releasing their album, Phantom Limb, on Misra Records on Februrary 28th.  The thing I like about this track is that it goes between this beautiful folk number, and that sludgy riff that kicks off the track.  Ultimately, the love is in the meat of the track, and you’ll definitely find yourself playing this song over and over again today.
