Honestly, not sure what all we’re going to cover this week, as it seems like all the folks have given up hyping new music and records; I reckon its time for those year end lists to really make it out there! But, we did manage to cover a good amount of rock n’ roll last week, so let us hip you to what rips! Personally, I keep spinning the Finnoguns Wake track, which is the new project from Shogun of Royal Headache. That said, there was definitely some cool new stuff dropping from the likes of Flight Mode, Kissing Party and Friko, all of which made our typical coverage. Threw up some Say Sue Me and Rosie Tucker tunes, as a reminder that they’ve been out on the road and I managed to squeeze in both on Thursday of last week! Let it rip!

Welcome Strawberry Share New Single

When Welcome Strawberry sprang onto the scene last year, they were blasting us with the perfect balance between noisy bits and tasty melodic morsels. They’ve got a new Scared to Look EP coming out Friday, and for this tune below, they’ve mostly pulled the noise away to reveal a warm blankety of meditative melody. The entirety of this track falls in love with this dreamy guitar line that works over a thump that’s merely meant to keep the pace. Sprinkles of ambience shimmer in the far off distance, but they always seem intent upon staying out of the way of the vocals, so the song’s more pop-centric. New EP is out Friday via Cherub Dream Records.

In a little over a month, Welcome Strawberry will release their debut LP via Cherub Dream Records, just adding to the great things going on in the Bay Area music scene. On the group’s latest single, they to you with you, bouncing back and forth between a traditional wash of shoegaze and a more stripped down blast of mellow pop. The shoegaze moments are heavy, swirling and feeding back, as you’d want, but it’s the almost-chorus where the noise gets teased into something almost childish; the vocal delivery sounds like a schoolyard cheer, while distortion bursts through in the distance. Another cool listen, if you ask me; the band will be dropping their self-titled album on September 2nd.

Well, we wrote up at least 25 fresh tracks last week, many of which we purposefully tried to make sure weren’t on all the other cool kid sites. That also might be why we missed a few that you’d expect us to cover. It was great to hear Cool Sounds taking some new risks for their new LP, plus we made sure we had that new Mary Onettes tune right up there. And, our old friends Big Bill dropped a new record, so we wanted to remind you of their gifts…and then, there were loads of other songs, meant to get you through those early Monday morning blues without having to think too much about what you’re listening to all day…just know it’ll be good.

Wanted to get into something slightly heavy this morning, so I figured we’d start the day off with this burning ripper from new Oakland outfit Welcome Strawberry. The band have just announced their debut LP, and with Jorge Elbrecht mixing their brand of poppy shoegaze, I’m excited to see where this group head. Honestly, it makes sense that Jorge has his hands in this, as this definitely sounds like the natural evolution of where he was taking Violens; it also hints at a bit of that fun acid house, albeit with a much heavier hand in there. Their debut self-titled LP drops this September courtesy of Too Good to Be True and Cherub Dream.
