Winter Shares Brand New Single

If you missed out on What Kind of Blue Are You, then you really missed out on an enduring listen, as I still go back to that last Winter record from time to time. But, Samira Winter has been quiet as of late, until today, when a new single drops from her recording project. At first, the song unfolds as sort of a simple ballad, working over a sampled beat, with Winter’s voice dipping in and out of focus atop the notes. Then, about midtrack, the fuzz seeps into the cracks, breaking the song into this atmospheric wash of discord and melody. It’s the sort of pop we’ve come to expect from the artist, adhering to modern structures while still willing to take risks. Let’s hope this is a sign of new work on the horizon.

Winter Share Final Single from What Kind of Blue Are You

There’s been a lot of great records this year, but I get the sneaking suspicion that I’m going to spend a lot of time with What Kind of Blue Are You. As I said last time, each single is operating in the same orbit as the others, but each offers a different musical twist on left of the dial pop. This one drifts casually, relying upon Samira’s voice to slowly pull the listener into the song, then suddenly the beat drops in taking the song on this sort of trippy pop ride that operates like a sort of pop dreamscape. There’s a little of this, a little of that, and all of it, from the guests to the vibes, has been pretty special. Winter release their new album on October 14th via Bar/None Records, and hit the road with Peel Dream Magazine through the Fall.

Winter Share Good Video (featuring Sasami)

The closer we get to the release of Winter‘s new LP, the more I’m getting anxious to hear it from start to finish. Today, we get another glimpse at Samira’s songwriting, this time in a steady fashion that really drives home the melodic nature. It’s almost like a spiritual move, a mantra of being good, however that plays at. Sasami‘s vocals just beckon you, like a siren begging you to crash upon the shores of this glorious slowcore masterpiece. With all the folks having a hand in the new release, from Sasami to Hatchie, you know we’re in for one hell of a ride; What Kind of Blue Are You is out October 14th via Bar/None Records.

Winter Share Atonement (ft. Hatchie)

We had a feeling that Winter had something new brewing, and today the band announces What Kind of Blue Are You, and in doing so, builds on the hype by releasing a single with Samira and Hatchie uniting on vocals. There’s a heavy groove that rides the verses, giving this darkened acid wash to the dreamy notes Winter is known to craft. You’re seduced into the semi-primal groove, burrowing deep in the song’s emotional appeal. But, then you get spit right out as the chorus erupts in this hyper-joyous explosion; it’s clearly the song’s high-point, but I think it perfectly captures the mixture of vibes we’re to expect on this brand new LP. Pretty decent way to start off the album cycle, eh? What Kind of Blue Are You is out on October 14th via Bar/None Records.
