She Sir, one of our longtime favorites, who we always give our undying support, released their excellent new LP, Rival Island, last week…and they return to the stage in Austin this week at the Mohawk. They’re one of the premiere dreampop/indiepop acts in Austin, if that’s your thing…not to mention this new record taking it to a whole other level. Plus, if you hadn’t heard, we’re putting out an EP by the incredible Blushing, who will be opening the show…so get there early and sample what’s coming your way! Plus, Wildfires will keep it real right in the middle of the night.
Doors are at 9 and its All Ages, so you’re out of excuses.
Summer is winding down, kids are back in school, so I know you’re itching to squeeze in some more fun times on a Friday night. Our city is teeming with good shows to hit up, but this stacked bill over at Cheer Up Charlie’s is where you ought to be tonight. For the low low price of FREE, you can catch not one, not two, but seven bands, including the likes of Wildfires, who are riding high off the release of their latest EP, Aguas Frescas pt. II. Not to mention there’s The Eastern Sea, who always crush their live sets, as well as the folksy stylings of Dreamboat. There’s also SMILE, Maryann, Triplets, and Kodachrome to complete the bill. Looks like doors are at 8pm, so get there early, and give some love to your resident musicians and check out tracks from some of the bands below.
I’ve been posting a lot about these folks from Wildfires, but when a band is on a roll, it’s pertinent that they get the attention they deserve. Wildfires have released a new video for a track off their upcoming EP, Aguas Frescas Pt. II and it’s a great way to fit a jam into your day. The video below, for “Undead Fun,” has fine green-screen technology, and…puppets, which will undoubtedly give you a laugh. Meanwhile, the song itself is a great shoe-gaze hit, with infectious jangly guitar riffs andgarage-rock vocals. Personally, I really love the way this song starts on the mild-side and then ramps up to close with a bit of a bite. Take a listen and thenget excited for that EP release, which is happening August 26th.
ATX’s very own Wildfires have got a new single out today that is well worth your time. The track, called “The Lame,” is available for you to download below, and it features everything we loved about the band when they released their last single, “Canelo” about a month ago. It’s got this pleasing shoe-gaze esque sound to it from the start when the guitars jangle in to the song. Later on, you get this laid back break down from the group that will have you returning again and again to the song. Take a listen, enjoy, and then look out for their upcoming release,Aguas Frescas Pt. II, which is out August 26th.
A year after releasing the well-received Aguas Frescas EP, Austin’s Wildfires are back to bring you Aguas Frescas Part II. They tossed this new single up recently, and I highly recommend you give it a listen. I really love the vocals on this track; they’re not overdone, and they have this slightly drizzled/hazy quality that’s quite endearing. Musically, there’s a feeling of pleasant meandering that courses through the song, a sense of learning, which would fit with the EPs themes of growing older and reflecting upon life’s great meaning. The more I play it, the more I love it. You can hear it below, and look for the release of the AF Part II on August 26th.
Local pop music has me excited, with tons of new bands brewing about town with hits galore. Kindatheart is one such young band, bringing upbeat pop rock of the indiepop ilk, even including some trading male/female vocal harmonies to boot! Of course, I’d be remiss to not mention two of the other acts taking part; Wildfires and Rose Selavy. Rose Selavy are great friends of ours, and the band is currently in the studio working on finishing touches for what we believe is a debut LP. It’s cheap, doors are at 8 PM, and you can go home feeling good about your life. Stream this sampler EP from Kindatheart to get a feel for the night’s vibes.
There’s always a brief lull right before the storm, except this year, there isn’t. There’s tons of shows with Austin band’s all over town, and tonight I encourage you to head to Cheer Up Charlies to catch the Wildfires EP release. The band offers you pop music via a kaleidoscope of dreaminess and shoegaze elements. I’m really excited to hear the band’s EP in full, but for now we’ll let you stream this brand new song they’ve got for you. Plus, there’s other local greats on the bill like The Sour Notes, The Zoltars (who just released their 3rd album recently) and Telepods. The weather’s been great, so why not enjoy your evening with great tunes.
