I love to wrap up the year later than most, mostly because my real job always has me swimming against the current. But, nonetheless, I’ve got a solid list of the records I loved this year…and you’ll notice a lot of the same stuff as my peers, with maybe a few tweaks here and there to throw my own flare into it. Not really sure how to write an intro into something that seems so opinion-based, so here’s the list of records you should already have purchased if you come to this site frequently!

Another week, and another weird day where I posted more than one person should, but alas, there has been a lot of really great music of late. So, below you’ve got our weekly playlist, sort of summing up where we ended last week, before we head into this new one. We had a really great Rock n’ Recipe interview with former ATX band Blood, plus some more local love for Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Covered some great new music from Naked Roommate, Wut and Lunar Vacation, then ended the week with one of my favorite acts, Constant Follower. There’s tons of music in between too, and we’ll be back again with more following these messages.

This Wut record is shaping up to just be an eleven track collection of pop hits, with another sample of that bounding joy presented below. The Vancouver act definitely feels like they’ve put on their Pacific NorthWest sweaters this morning, as you’ll surely hear early K Records nods to the drumming and recording style on this gem. Their whimsical overlapping vocal work textures the song with varying layers of melody, so much so that you’re likely to find yourself ensnared in the dense pit of pop layers. You’d also be near the bullseye if you threw your darts at a bit of an Oceanic nod, and you know that’ll keep silly folks like me coming back to this one. Wut will release Mingling with the Thorns via HHBTM on August 23rd.

For some reason, this past week felt a little slow in terms of new music coming our way, and while I say that, we still cranked out over 20 tracks for you to peruse below. I was super excited for the new track from Low’s Alan Sparhawk, the first music we’ve heard from him since the passing of his Mimi; it was a beautiful piece that shows Alan off on a grand adventure. The Reds, Pinks and Purples snuck in some special new singles, so we’re grateful Glenn got those out into the world. I was stoked on new stuff from Austin’s Marry Cherry, not to mention a new Wut tune that came our way. Kicked off this playlist with my favorite tune, Teenage Tom Petties bringing in the hooks with “Night Nurse.” So, press play and see what you missed out on last week!

Everything about the newest single from Wut feels very Pacific Northwest, at least if you were one of those that grew up listening to Beat Happening and the like. There’s a centric pop melody that courses through the middle, sugar-sliding into your heart with immediacy that opens you up to the group’s playful magic. But, while there’s that tootsie-roll center, the outer coating of the track is filled with sweet discord, punctuated by swirling walls of guitar and snapping drum beats that offer up a bit of bounce. Oh, and stay tuned for the 2 minute mark when they deliver a sharpness that drives home the track’s message! You’ll want to grab a copy of Mingling with the Thorns, out on August 18th via HHBTM.

It’s been a great week for the Pacific Northwest indiepop scene, with the Softies announcing their return. But, you can look to another great pop act, WUT, if you’re willing to double-down on candy earworms; I mean, there’s some pop cross-pollination if you’re reading your line notes. Alas, the song itself definitely wears the style of the PNW (in my mind anyways); it almost feels like the spirit of Calvin Johnson just bled into the songwriting process for this one, long ago during some Indian Summer. While the rhythmic rumbled works its cathartic magic, the sharpness of the vocals during the verses shines like the sun through the windows, illuminating your listening room…the chorus group vocal and bobbing bass is perfect. Look for Mingling with the Thorns to drop on August 18th via HHBTM.

WUT Announce Mingling with Thorns

When your band’s resume features members of Knife Pleats and Tough Age (plus an appearance from Christina of Artsick), you already come to our ATH table with built in clout. WUT is the band, and they’re not messing around as they announce their new record, Mingling with Thorns for the masses; it’ll be out later Summer via HHBTM Records. Today, we offer up this rolling bit of jangling pop, and almost from the first falling vocal I was floored; the line “sea of green/empty screen/I’m waiting/Now I know has this beautiful voice that just drops the tone, sucker-punching you with charm…a feat they continue to utilize throughout. But, this track’s not about a singular moment or mere vocal treats; take a listen to the buoyant bop right at the 33 second mark, twisting the song with just the slightest wrinkle. Within the lyrical confines, you’ll find the band questioning the patriarchy and capitalism, reflecting and wondering where one finds their way in such antiquated systems. For now, the only way you need to go is towards the band’s site and pre-order a copy of Mingling with Thorns; it drops August 28th via HHBTM.
