New Music from A Lily

James Vella is one of the members of post-rock outfit Yndi Halda, but today we bring you a project from his solo work under the moniker A Lily. He’s prepping Id-Dar Tal Missier and this song should put you immediately on alert to his craft. The song really has two main parts, repeated twice. The opening section is this careful bit of quiet pop; it works around a metronomic rimshot, tinkering keys and Vella’s voice as instrument. While it may not be immediately apparent, the first movement builds towards to second, with this burst of spectacular pop where the feelings give a sense of natural joyousness…and slowly it returns to the first movement. A special number awaits you my friends; the EP will be released by KingfisherBluez on August 31st.

New Music from Tim the Mute

Tim the Mute is the project of one Tim Clapp, who also happens to run a rather great label, Kingfisher Bluez. Just recently he put up previews of a ton of new music; I’m particularly looking forward to the next full-length, Do In Yourself. In a sense, he’s writing the same classic pop songs he’s always written, but I feel like music of this sort has sort of gone to the wayside, unfortunately. His voice has some Wayne Coyne tones, which would be an easy way to connect, or just listen to someone writing earnest pop songs you won’t hear anywhere else. KB will release the vinyl, with Lost Sound Tapes putting out a tape version.

Even More New Mammoth Penguins

Fresh off the release of their thematic John Doe release, Mammoth Penguins are already back with a new release, this time curated by Fortuna Pop (the label that refuses to die). These delightful two tracks appear as part of Kingfisher Bluez Singles Club, which has 12 7″ curated by some of their favorite labels/friends. It’s a subscription series, and if this is where the club starts…then we’re in for a good ride. I love the patience shown on the opening track of this 7″, waiting until the 1 minute mark to unleash its beautiful fury. The B-side is a subtle charmer, illustrating yet again why we love whatever Emma Kupa touches. If the 7″ club is your thing, do it…otherwise just enjoy these great jams.

New Stuff from Kingfisher Bluez

I’m the kind of fella that gravitates towards certain labels…so much so that I haunt their soundcloud and bandcamp pages. Today I’m bringing you updates from Kingfisher Bluez, one of Canada’s fine musical establishments. The label has two new releases of note…and I’ve got them both streaming for you below. First, is Woodpigeon, offering up generous folk stylings, though with a slight pop leaning. Then you have Peach Pit, giving off soulful pop vibes, almost like generous crooners aiming to make you happy. Each release hits this Spring (March and April), so why not sample the goods. Be sure to check the label for other gems too!


Airy Pop from The Arctic Flow

Just when I thought I’d run a bunch of the same old same old you’ve already read about, I found this delightful tune from the Arctic Flow. They’ve got a brand new 7″ from Kingfisher Bluez, and it’s the subdued pop that I find enchanting. There’s a slight sparkle in the guitar progression, akin to many an indiepop gem, tied in with a warm vocal that calms your soul. I love how the tracks on this release are gentle and soothing; the pace of the songs here really allow for musical escapism. But, the release is super limited, so grab em’ while you can!

Uplifting Number from Body Is Working

livingI love to follow the micro-labels of the world; it’s where you find the best tunes. Thus I spent today looking for new music all over, like at Kingfisher Bluez; it is there that I discovered Living Body. What was once a one off show has emerged into a promising new act, and this single perfect demonstrates what’s to come. It opens with an emphatic statement, but circles back with just a bit of fragility in the vocals…occasionally reinforced with ringing chords. This is one of those numbers that reinvigorates the spirit, allowing you to bask in the world of music as a smile creeps upon your face. Look for the band’s debut, Body Is Working, on December 2nd.

Stream New/Old Unhappybirthday

unhappyPlease please please listen to this new/oldUnhappybirthday. I’ve been browsing the Interwebs forever and never found a thing I liked until I stumbled upon this one here..via the always reliable Kingfisher Bluez. This record, Schauer, was recorded in the bedroom, and it definitely has that aesthetic, at least in the vocals. Musically, however, there’s a real vibrancy that shines through the confines of one’s bedrooms, crafting pop songs you can take with you anywhere you go. Remember when you loved Blank Dogs? This is just as cool, if not cooler. But, if you’re one of those that caught on early, and already jammed this out, it has a new song on this edition, making it worthy. Besides, why not listen to good music today?

Did Someone Say Peaness?

peanessThere are some really reliable record labels that probably don’t get the adoration or attention they deserve, but with labels like Kingfisher Bluez, I always go back to see what they’re working on. The label recently put up some great tunes on their bandcamp…one of which comes from Peaness. The label is releasing a 7″, and the tunes they’ve got up are catchy as anything you’ll likely hear today…it sort of reminds me of Standard Fare, using sharp guitar cuts and a great female frontiedvocal. You’ll be able to grab your own before the 7″ is released at the end of July.

Jamming This Pre Nup

prenupFeel like there’s been slim picking in great songs lately, which is why I’m glad I stumbled upon this new-ish track from Pre Nup. It’s one of the song’s featured on the band’s forthcoming 7″ for Debt Offensive/Kingfisher Bluez, and you’ll definitely have to play it a couple of dozen times today. There’s definitely a lo-fi aspect, but it walks a fine line between jangling pop and scuzzy garage rock, which is a perfect combination for my joy. Look for this 4 song 7″ to hit in May of this year.

Indiepop Delight from Sleuth

sleuthAre you looking for the perfect place where Alvvays and Allo Darlin meet? That perfect indiepop comes in way of Vancouver’s Sleuth. The vocal qualities seem to lean more toward the former, while the musical aspirations closely resemble that of the latter. It harkens back that perfect late 90s era of pop music…no bullshit, just great songs. They’re doing a limited release of their latest album, Out of the Blue Period, via Kingfisher Bluez and Jigsaw Records this month, so if you know anything about modern indiepop, you know this is always a trustworthy source.
