Last Week’s Jams, Today (7.18 – 7.22)

We got back to being super busy last week, with RayRay premiering that new No Win jam, plus a bunch of other new stuff that we were stoked to dive into. Good to see Free Time and Laura Jean back with new stuff, not to mention a little local love from the likes of First Names and Twain (he lives here!). All in all, its a bunch of stuff, all over the place musically, just like we do, so hopefully this kicks your Monday into gear!

First Names Drop Coconut Oil

Austin’s First Names are a group we’ve been keeping our eyes on the last few years, and they’ve just dropped this delicious new single that I’m totally digging. There’s this heavy psych wall that sets the mood, but its soon peeled back to reveal the melodic guitar shuffling that rides throughout the verses. Honestly, one of my favorite pieces about this number is the high-pitched vocal work; it reminds me of our friends in Colourmusic, stretching the boundaries of what we deem as perfectly melodic. And just in case you missed those heavy riffs from the opening, they splice them in and out of the song, working with this huge wall of fuzz to balance the whole jam. Dig it.

ATX Spotlight: First Names

As much as we love sharing news of national/international bands, there’s nothing quite like the discovery of even more local talent. Today I’m pumped to share with you the premiere single “City Buses” from Austin, TX based outfit First Names. This one is going to be for those of you who like garage rock sounds with heavily distorted guitars, banging drums, and softer vocals. Bottom line, it shows a lot of promise for these young upstarts in our little city. Carry on.
