New Art Pop from Vinyl Williams

When the word art pop gets thrown around, it can weird some people out.  We’re not all ready to invest in the inner workings of an artist, but I assure you, it will be worth your time if you give some of your day to Vinyl Williams.  Lionel Williams is the artist here, and he’s created this captivating number that has the ability to alter your mental state.  Guitars move in and out while the vocals hauntingly float atop the mix.  You’ll find more songs just like this on November 13th when he releases Lemniscate via No Pain In Pop.

Great New Lo-Fi from Fantasmes

I haven’t really been able to find some super punk rock lately, so I’ve been delving into some weird lo-fi tunes left and right.  My latest discovery, via some secret special friends, comes to us by way of Puerto Rico/NYC outfit Fantasmes.  Their latest effort Redness Moon just came out today, and this title track is something I’ve been obsessing over.  Whether it’s the brooding music or the way the lyrics casually glide over it all doesn’t matter, but what matters is that I’m just going to play this song on repeat.  I can see some psychedelic links too, so that should appease friends looking to drop out.  Regardless, it’s interesting, so give it a go.

New Music from Villagers

Long ago I raved about Becoming a Jackal, an album by Villagers that I think a lot of people really overlooked.  But, now they’re back with a brand new single that is scheduled to come out on October 22nd, and with a recent tour with Grizzly Bear, I think they might finally start to break into the big time.  “The Waves” is every bit as dramatic as the earlier output from the band, but this one has a different approach.  For me, this tune utilizes the electronic production as its backbone, and the emphatic beauty ensues.  I just picked this up on iTunes, so you too can grab it early if it suits your fancy.

New Pop Tunes from Generationals

We’ve long supported Generationals over here at ATH, and I don’t think that’s going to stop anytime soon.  There’s something effortless about the way they construct their tunes, and this new single definitely epitomizes that aspect; it’s not overly produced, with just a simple vocal over an electronic beat in the background.  You can find this song on their upcoming Lucky Numbers EP, which will be available to the masses on October 2nd.  It seems to have a lot less of the guitar hooks, but when it sounds this good, who cares.

Chilled Tune from New Animal

I’m always down to help represent for our friend Rob over at Old Flame Records.  He’s just released this new single from Atlanta’s New Animal, and I’m really digging this lead single.  For a duo, it’s got a real dense feeling to it, with multiple layers, both instrumentally and vocally.  As the song slowly unfolds, the two pile upon more sounds, creating a rather interesting pop collage.  If you like what you hear, you can grab the single from Old Flame, or you can wait a bit, as they plan to release a limited edition tape soon.

New Trickling Track from Mark Eitzel

It’s weird how the music world works, heralding an act one minute and disregarding the net.  I don’t know, I try not to get too caught up in the hype or the hoopla, so I’m definitely going to share this new Mark Eitzel tune with you.  You hopefully recognize Mark’s name from American Music Club, but now he’s going it alone again with his new offering, Don’t Be A Stranger.  This record is coming out on October 2nd via Merge Records, and the label’s thinking it’s going to be his best work in decades…along the lines of Five Leaves Left and Harvest Moon.  Definitely interested to hear the whole collection after letting this song carry me away for a bit.

New Mellow Jam from Mount Eerie

It looks as though we’re going to wrap up our great week here with the mellower side of things, and I’m perfectly okay with that.  We’re nearing the release of the second Mount Eerie album, from Phil Elverum this year; Ocean Roar is supposed to be contrasted with Clear Moon, which came out early in 2012. When listening here, I feel as if this track is dominated by the percussive element, even though it’s lightly placed in the background.  Phil quietly sings atop it all while a hint of atmospherics moving in and out.  Really, there’s no one making music like Phil.

Great Power Pop from the Barreracudas

I’ve been jamming out to the Barreracudas for quite some time, having fallen head over heels for Nocturnal Missions, their last LP.  But, this summer they kicked out the jams with a new 7″ for Windian Records, hopefully to pass the time as they record a new full-length.  If you like your guitars shredded fast with a bit of keyboard in the background to propel things in the direction of sugary goodness, then you’ll absolutely love this track.  Oh, and that slight vocal hiccup? Marvelous.  Enjoy this jam and get your hands on the 7″ before they run out!

New Chilled Song from Gangi

It’s always amazing to me what modern recordings processes can do for a duo; you know, things that couldn’t be done as easily in the 60s.  My newest discovery is LA duo Gangi, who’ve got a little bit of a psych bent on their tunes.  They’ll soon be releasing their second LP, Gesture Is, on October 2nd via Office of Analogue and Digital.  Not only am I stoked upon the groove coming here, but I’m really digging the way the group is looping the vocals–which is what I was referencing earlier.  If you listen carefully you can hear the faint squawk of a horn near the end of the song…another special moment. Enjoy this one.

New Jam from Punks on Mars

Ryan Howe has gotten a lot of love for his Punks on Mars project, and I have a feeling he’s on the verge of unleashing something magical.  The New York power-pop glam rocker has just released a new digital single, and he’s been generous enough to let us share one of the latest tracks from the People Talk single with you.  I love the fact that he relies heavily on the keyboard/organ sound with this track, whilst still maintaining that sinister edge of garage pop.  This is definitely becoming one of my favorite acts to jam to; you’ll dig it if you want a little bit more glitter pop with your tastes for the likes of Hunx.
