Pure Indie Rock from Overseas

overseas-album-cover-500I know Ryan will agree with this, as Overseas are pretty much our favorite super group.  As Texas kids of the 90s, we grew into our own listening to the music of Centro-matic, Pedro the Lion and Bedhead, all who have components that are playing key roles here.  That’s right, you’ve got the Kadane’s, Will Johnson and Mr. Bazan.  I don’t think that anyone who was around that the very thought of that combination alone gets chills going.  I don’t need to say much, but I’ll share a few jams with you, just so you can revel in our joy. They’ll release their self-titled LP on June 11th.

Classic Brit Pop Sound from Tripwires

tripwiresI’ve heard a few tunes from Reading’s Tripwires up to this point, but nothing seems as fittingly British as this new single that they’ve just released. It’s reminiscent of old Travis tunes, but there’s a bit more messing with the atmospheric attitude lurking in the background.  That sort of exploration shows a band growing in their confidence, but also a group destined to forge their own territory.  The group will be releasing their album, Spacehopper, via Frenchkiss Records; it’ll be in stores on June 18th. I think the group can go several ways, so I’m excited to see what direction they choose to pursue. I’m sure we’ll all enjoy it, regardless.

Tonight seems like one of those crazy evenings in Austin with so many shows to choose from.  My personal choice for the evening would definitely have to be girl rocker Colleen Green at Hotel Vegas.  Also on the bill are fellow rockers Cheap Curls & Gremlins UK.  I’m not seeing a price for the show anywhere, but I’m sure it won’t hurt your wallet too bad.  Rock on.

Sweet Pop from Sugar Stems

sugarstemsThis is the case where the name has to say it all.  You want sweet? Then you better get behind the Sugar Stems. On the group’s new record they combine all the classic elements of power-pop, though with a steady punk edge.  Top it off with some sweet female vocal harmonies and you’ve got precisely what you need to leave listeners with a breathless hit.  The band will release their new record, Can’t Wait, today via the always reliable Dirtnap Records, so you’ll be able to bob your head up and down all day if you just hit up your local record store.

Surprising Psych Gem from The Numerators

130405-numeratorsOkay, I’m being honest here. When I think of Lubbock, I occasionally think of Buddy Holly, but I almost never think of music.  That’s not the problem of The Numerators, and in fact, I don’t think the band could even care about what us Austinites think.  What we can say is that their hazy pysch rocker is sure to raise some eyebrows, and I’ll admit right off the bat that it’s a pretty respectable gem, which will be released as part of Suicide Squeeze Single Series. Personally, I think it’s a great thing when a band can shut the world up just with their music, so I’ll happily insert foot in mouth and let you guys enjoy the tune.

Sad Bastard Perfection from Gambles

653Rarely do I get overwhelmed by a track.  Sure, an album can do it, but a song’s got to be pretty incredible in order to floor me from the first listen.  That being said, I think one of the best songs I’ve heard this year is the latest single that’s been floating around from Gambles.  The man behind the music, Matthew Siskin, will be releasing the Far From Your Arms EP on May 7th, and the title track is  a must have in your daily listening rotation. There’s something about the frailty in the vocal, pushed to the front by the soft guitar strumming; it all creates this emotion that’s hard to put into words, other than the fact that it creates musical chills. Listen to this song again and again.

Let’s Rock with Hussy

trackshussy_fullsize_story1Had a late night last evening, so I, like many of you, will need a good pick me up this morning.  What better way to start off than this new noisy rocker from the Hussy. They’ve got a new record titled Pagan Hiss, which will be released on May 7th by Southpaw Records.  This song has a weird bit of garage rock blended with some stuttering math rock guitar lines.  You’ll find the vocals extremely similar to other acts around, which should make it super easy for you attach yourself to this tune, not to mention it’s just a rad rock track to play so you can annoy the guy in the cubicle next to you.

gun_outfit

Date Friday, April 5th
Location Beerland
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets Cheap

If you’ve kept your eye on the site this week, you’ll know that one of the LPs that came out this week that I can’t stop spinning is Hard Coming Down from Gun Outfit.  It’s got the perfect blend of modern day indie rock with that nostalgic 90s bent, and I’ve heard nothing but great thigns about their live set. But, as if that weren’t enough, you’ll get to see underground icons, Versus, and one of our local favorites Flesh Lights.  To top it off, the Young and Ghetto Ghouls will be joining in, so you’ll get to see five rad bands for pretty cheap.  And everyone at Beerland is friendly, so there’s that.  Don’t be scared, come rock with me!

Sweeping Pop from Seatraffic

TempoOfRegret_artworkI’ve written about my love for Seatraffic before, and as the band continues to work hard on their single series, I’ve got another great tune to share with you.  I like the expansiveness of this track, using a trickling bit of keyboard to allow room for the floating harmonies to move in and out of the track.  Vocals are slow moving, matching the pace that the music (and artwork) emits.  They’ve also got an accompanying video for the song that you can view HERE.  Don’t forget to stop by the group’s BANDCAMP page to pick up all their new singles by kindly donating what you can spare.

SxSW 2013: Day Party Pics

No, I am not done yet. This one and a gallery of the showcases is all that is left. If I can muster it, I’ll do a best of post. Best-ofs are easier well removed from a festival because lasting memories help define what really got you going.

Anyway, this giant gallery of daytime show goodness includes some candids and portraits from around the conference during the unofficial events. Highlights include Wax Idols, Nobunny, The Soft Moon, Criminal Hygiene, Bleeding Rainbows, that band Thurston Moore is in, Delorean and so much more.

Click through. Play a game of “oh yeah, I was there.”
