ACL 2018 in Photos: WE2 Saturday
Friday was Alvvays going to be Nathan’s favorite day, even if he was never a Beatles fan.
Saturday did give us a treat in the form of Durand Jones and the Indications. There were a few other lovely highlights for the fam.
Brian:
Nathan stressed seeing Durand Jones and man was that the best recommendation. Soulful, smooth and honest, the set full of falsetto harmonies and featuring one of the best backing bands was a highlight for all of ACL for me. So very good.
Mon Laferte was a unexpected treat. Take a French WWII era songstress, place her in a Tele Novella and you have Chile’s Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte. Songs that ache or ooze, another fantastic band, you know the story of every song despite a language barrier.
The Breeders and Japanese Breakfast were the big overlap today. I was able to shoot The Breeders at Homeaway, hustle over the hill to Japanese Breakfast at Barton Springs and still return to Homeaway to catch a few more classics.
Blood Orange had a big crowd for the mid-sized stage, partially gathered as the preamble to CHVRCHES. Dev Hynes was charming and sounded great, but we mourn the loss of Lightspeed Champion. CHVRCHES as the headliner on the bigger stage across the hillside in this concert within the festival was predictably charming. Lauren is a commanding presence and the songs come to life.
Sylvan Esso surprised me. Lovely lighting, though a bit too much haze for this photographer’s preference, they ran through the hits and the kids went crazy and I felt that energy. Fun.
No Metallica approval for me. I took solace in the comforting arms of Justice. Clever lighting, hits.
