FT5: Songs to Get Amped Up For America!!!!!
If you love soccer (football) or hate it; you have to admit that every four years “Football (Soccer) Fever” hits our shores. The excitement level builds around water coolers across the country, if only to die down after (American) football season starts again. This short lived, broad sweeping enthusiasm is elevated providing the Yanks have some positive results, and hopefully raising a few jaded eyebrows in the process. If you don’t pay attention, you may not know that our boys in the good ol’ Red, White, and Blue pulled off quite a feat last Wednesday with some late heroics. I have been playing “The Beautiful Game” my whole life and continue to play now, so I am pumped to the max leading up to this weekend’s huge knockout match. To help you get in the mood for a Battle Royale in Rustenburg, South Africa versus Ghana, I present here, the Top 5 songs to get amped up for America!! Don’t tread on me Ghana!
5. Trey Parker & Matt Stone – “America, Fuck Yeah”
Not including this song would be a travesty. Sure it’s a satire of our self proclaimed dominance over the world, but nobody could have said it better. Our pride and loyalty to the Red, White, and Blue is sometimes laughable, but it is always sincere; especially when faced against adversity. Let the flag fly, hug a soldier, pet a Bald Eagle, and tell the Terrorists to suck it!
4. Rage Against the Machine – “Calm Like A Bomb”
Just to clarify, being American doesn’t necessarily mean you blindly agree with the government and their decisions. In fact, we Americans should be proud to live in a country where we can stand up for what we believe without repercussions. This is not a “Pro-America” song, but Rage has always been able to Amp me to be a part in a rapidly changing America! They just wanted a few changes to their country and what’s wrong with that? Feel the Funk Blast!
3. Mötley Crüe – “Kickstart My Heart”
Living like a rock star; fast and hard is somewhat of an American tradition. What screams America more than decadence, jail time, drug usage, promiscuity, and tattoos! For all of their faults, the Crüe have influenced a generation of young Americans to live life to the fullest with no regrets and in the process show absolutely no respect for authority. In other words… “Fuck you world! It’s our time.”
2. Creedence Clearwater Revival – “Fortunate Son”
Admittedly, the Vietnam Era was not one of our proudest moments as a country, but it was undoubtedly a turning point. The intro to this particular song gets my blood pumping so fast it makes the Terrorists quake in their boots. CCR is one of the most distinctly American bands ever and what better band to highlight on a Top Five for ‘Murka, whether that be for, or in this case, against it. Sure America has its faults, but the working class heroes of this great country whom Fogerty proudly represents here, will never turn their backs against it. As he says, “Some boys were born made to wave the flag, The Red, White, and Blue!”
1. AC/DC – “Thunderstruck”
This week, the Top spot’s baddassness speaks for itself. AC/DC may have been Australian, but their success in the States is unrivaled by only but a few. We Americans are proud of our military force and rightly so. We possess the toughest group of soldiers and the most advanced set of badass weaponry ever conceived (kudos to science). Now I for one am not for aggressively and unnecessarily showing our clout, but if we need to defend ourselves against the forces of evil, we rise up like no other force in the world to eliminate it. Let’s not get into politics here, but show some respect to those who gave their lives to defend this great country. Hooah!
Honorable Mention:
Charlie Kelly in Always Sunny in Philadelphia – “Gonna Rise Up”
“Rock, Flag, and Eagle!”
Fellow Americans, what songs did I miss? You can tell me in person on Saturday. Grab an American beer and some Freedom Fries from Progress and join the ATH crew watch the Yanks obliterate the Black Stars at ND @ 501 studios on Saturday at 1:30. Make your country proud and support our boys overseas!
No “Born in the USA” is a serious flaw in this list.
While it is a great song, “Born In The USA” is one of the most anti-American songs out there. Just read the lyrics, it’s very depressing. Not just Anti-Goverment like the others I added. That’s my reasoning anyway.
It was in the running, as way “Rocking in the Free World”, but it was eliminated for the same reason.
I’ve never really cared for “Born in the USA”. Don’t know what it is… just don’t think it’s a very good song. I would cry foul with no Boss being on the list, but then again, it’s tough to pick just one from him.
“Rockin in the Free World” is automatically eliminated Jon because it’s written by a damn Canadian freedom hatin’ hippie! FUCK YEAH.
Band-Aids! FUCK YEAH!
Good call with Team America.
I think Bruce said it best with :
“Badlands you gotta live it every day
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price youve gotta pay
Well keep pushin till it’s understood
And these badlands start treating us good”
It’s us versus the world. Fuck ya.
Great top 5 idea, Jon.
Eye Of The Fucking Tiger – Survivor
You’re The Best Around – Joe Esposito
Get Ghana a bodybag!
Bummer. They must’ve not been listening.
At least we made our country proud go out rather than get beat down like Mexico or England. Nobody will be happy to see them when they land. The reverse can be said of our team. Pure class.
