Show Pics: Faith No More @ Austin Music Hall (7/26)

Faith No MoreOh my garsh, it was hot in there. I know they are maximizing before demise, but I’d gladly add a dollar to a beer if I could avoid sweating like a prize-fighter. The coolest place to be in Austin Music Hall was at the front door where air rushed in from the outside. It was like opening an airlock in space.

Anyway, Faith No More came to town and brought along Napalm Death. Merch was sold. Classics were played. Lyrics were sung by all in attendance. We have the pics and a few notes from me and maybe even from super-fan-Cleo when and if she ever recovers after the break.

Liz Caruana PhotographyOne of my favorite throwback jams is Spandau Ballet‘s “Long Story Short“. It is a timeless track for me that set a tone for the New Romanticism scene that inspired so many great bands, either to pick up a synth or to leave it behind. Stylish and warmer, the sound was a pillar for the 80’s British Invasion.

For whatever reason, the HANW track I am sharing today reminds me of a mix of that Spandau track run head on into the best of Bloc Party in a stripped down jam; a bass line that walks up and down and guitars that are jangly and layered. The band is a three-piece called Dirty Ghosts and they call San Francisco home. The track is called “Cataract” and is the first single and title track of an EP being released today on Burger Records, so look for it when you head out for record collecting after work. A full length is due in the fall on Last Gang.

We’re Not Dead Yet

StarfuckerThere has been a lot of talk recently about the scene and venues and closings and doom with gloom for good measure. +1 and I went out for an evening of music to hang with some friends and get our sweaty dance party on. At the beginning of the day, the two shows hadn’t sold out, but by mid-afternoon both the Tanlines show outside at Red 7 and the Starfucker show on the main stage at The Mohawk had sold out. That is kinda nuts given the heat, the lack of students and the summer doldrums that usually wreak havoc on venues. Yes, we got a big time batch of beats, friends and sweat.

Have A Nice Weekend

for esmeLet me start this HANW post with some show preview action…

I’ll be hitting up Tanlines and maybe even Starfucker tonight. Tanlines is at Red7, tix available here or at the door, MAS YSA is opening with doors at 9pm. You can get your Starfucker tix right here for their set at The Mohawk with Shy Boys, doors at 8pm. So many shows this weekend. Go out. Update: Well, both are sold
out now.
Now on to a little It Dept PYAITK. The song is called “You”. The band is called For Esme (no, not that Esme) and they are a three-piece out of Toronto. I don’t recall how I came across this track, I just know I added it to a bucket playlist I use for jams around the house. I realized I hadn’t shared it with you and because I care, here you go. It is alovely bit of Canadian dance pop goodness that is playful at times and head-down dance party at others. I love the balance here and I hope you dig it.

Show Review: Dick Diver @ The Mohawk (7/13)

The MohawkSome days you get to hit up a show, hope for huge attendance, and in the end, you’re just happy you got to be part of an intimate experience.  While I wish many more people loved Dick Diver as much as I do, I was glad I got to witness the band’s first Austin gig, and can only hope that as they travel across the States that they’re convinced to come back.

Show Pics: Elvis Depressedly @ The Mohawk (7/8)

Elvis DepressedlyCatching up on some pics I was gun shy to post given our instability last week (let me know if any of you see things loading weird or slowly).

Elvis Depressedly‘s solidly lo-fi delivery of well-crafted indie-pop songs charmed the ATH team. I missed them during SxSW, but The Mohawk and Transimssion remedied that for me with an indoor show. The show ended up selling out due to a highly popular double-headlining tour with Mitski and a great opener in Eskimeaux. I felt older than usual, lots of Xs on hands.

Have A Nice Weekend

TelepatheSo real life got in the way of me getting this post done for Friday. It was a busy and frustrating day in the home office. Yech. But hard work is its own reward, right?

So we all here stories about the records that take forever to make the light of day, recently a local band had such a record get released. Tiger Waves has a recording from 2012 finally make its way to the intarwebs and onto the presses. For this post, I bring you the “latest” from Telepathe. Also recorded in 2012, Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais’s record Destroyer will finally be available on August 7th on their own label BZML. Here is what we have deprived from hearing. This is a monumentally good track IMHO that first appeared online a year ago. Sorry for missing it, but if anything, it proves good songs don’t show their age.

Flatliner’s Black Medicine Preorder

So, you missed the Austin Record Label Flea Market, eh? You could have bought this EP. You should have bought this EP.

Austin has a growing electronic scene, no longer just dance pop and party jams (though we love that, too), people like Jesse Straight and Adam Fangsrud, heretofore known as Flatliner, are building songs on stage with a yard sale of synthesizers, new and old, to create layers of waveforms and beats. The Black Medicine EP is up for preorder via Holodeck, here. Just so happens, they did play the Flea Market and damn, it was good.

Check out the track “Blasted Highway” for a taste…

Painted Palms Deliver Another Hit

paintedpalmsI am getting behind this new Painted Palms record in a big way. The previously released track had a slower groove to it, quite reminiscent of Jagwar Ma. “Tracers” brings more of the dance party using beachy vocals and digital pop goodness, quite reminiscent of Cut Copy with Yaz‘s synth punctuations.

Horizons was recorded with some former-DFA wizardry from Eric Broucek and will land on September 4th via Polyvinyl
