Have A Nice Weekend

TelepatheSo real life got in the way of me getting this post done for Friday. It was a busy and frustrating day in the home office. Yech. But hard work is its own reward, right?

So we all here stories about the records that take forever to make the light of day, recently a local band had such a record get released. Tiger Waves has a recording from 2012 finally make its way to the intarwebs and onto the presses. For this post, I bring you the “latest” from Telepathe. Also recorded in 2012, Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais’s record Destroyer will finally be available on August 7th on their own label BZML. Here is what we have deprived from hearing. This is a monumentally good track IMHO that first appeared online a year ago. Sorry for missing it, but if anything, it proves good songs don’t show their age.

Flatliner’s Black Medicine Preorder

So, you missed the Austin Record Label Flea Market, eh? You could have bought this EP. You should have bought this EP.

Austin has a growing electronic scene, no longer just dance pop and party jams (though we love that, too), people like Jesse Straight and Adam Fangsrud, heretofore known as Flatliner, are building songs on stage with a yard sale of synthesizers, new and old, to create layers of waveforms and beats. The Black Medicine EP is up for preorder via Holodeck, here. Just so happens, they did play the Flea Market and damn, it was good.

Check out the track “Blasted Highway” for a taste…

Painted Palms Deliver Another Hit

paintedpalmsI am getting behind this new Painted Palms record in a big way. The previously released track had a slower groove to it, quite reminiscent of Jagwar Ma. “Tracers” brings more of the dance party using beachy vocals and digital pop goodness, quite reminiscent of Cut Copy with Yaz‘s synth punctuations.

Horizons was recorded with some former-DFA wizardry from Eric Broucek and will land on September 4th via Polyvinyl

Having a Nice Weekend?

EqualityPretty exciting news yesterday, eh? There is going to be a lot of engagement parties and wedding invites going out soon. Get your wardrobe sorted. I took that pic yesterday.

I missed doing a Have A Nice Weekend post because work was nuts and I had to work through to a 4:30 happy hour call with friends celebrating the news in the 4th Street area. So I am posting this mid-weekend in hopes you’ll use it for getting ready to go out or when you come in from the party later tonight, perhaps hanging over tomorrow (safe rides, people, safe rides). It is called “The Floor” and is by an artist called Turtle. You can stream the entire EP on SoundCloud.

Delorean Release A Great Track

DeloreanI owe you all an apology. This track was available as a free download for one day. I missed it. *sniffle* Sorry friends.

BUT, you can still play it all over the place on streaming services and I think this is the best Delorean song since the Ayrton Senna EP. “Bena”, featuring backing vocals from Hanin Zueiter, is the B-Side to “Crystal”; they got them backwards, IMHO. The band has their own label now, called PHLEX, so expect more stuff to hit whenever they feel like it.

Austin Record Label Flea Market 2015

Flea MarketFirst, a HUGE thank you Marcus and the Transmission team, as well as all the friends at The Mohawk for their amazing hospitality for making their home our home for a day. Record Nerd Takeover!!!

By conversations I had during the day with patrons and vendors, it seems the Flea Market was a success. We were amazed with the support, despite the fact that we were up against some serious rain storms and potential flooding. It was a team effort and if the labels hadn’t bought into the idea, it would have been DOA. One recurring theme, let’s do it again.

But let’s take a quick look back, relive it if you were there or take a gander if you missed out.

10835376_908783505799991_5030833058499458154_oSometimes, the weather just wants us to be shut-ins and listen to dark synthy goodness.* Perhaps you need song be kickstart your indulgence of hazy waved sounds.

This track by A Copy For Collapse, an Italy-based duo making strong synth-driven darkwave, is called “Grey Sunday” so I will forgive you if you withhold playback to be clever and/or aprapos. It seems to go nowhere and everywhere at the same time by adding and pulling back circular elements, buoyed by a vocal skillfully buried in effects, as it puts you in that hypnotic state that causes the dreamy defocus. No Sense of Place Records put out the record Waiting For jsut a little bit ago, available here.

*but you are not allowed to stay home tomorrow. #austinrecordlabelfleamarket

ATH @ X Games Austin 2015

ATH was invited to attend X Games and we agreed based on the strength of he local lineup that graced the big stage during the day leading up to the headliners and then on to the Super Stage mega headliners. The cool part was that my access allowed me to moonlight as a sports photographer. We all have a history of skateboarding or riding a bike or something rad like that, don’t we? I worked in a bike shop to buy my Haro freestyle bike and still have my Lance Mountain special edition in the office. To get to see some guys like Dennis McCoy and Tony Hawk still riding and skating at a high level and catch the innovation coming from so many guys from Austin along with rally car and truck racing and maniacs on dirt bikes, it was an exciting change up to my usual subject matter. I got a little twitchy not shooting f2.8 or bigger and ISO 200? What is that? I don’t leave the house for less than ISO 2500. #concertphotographerjokes

So join me as we take a trip down memory lane and talk X Games…

Show Pics: Summer Nights Party @ Empire (5/30)

We’re finally clearing some back inventory after the meltdown of 2015. Feels good to be up and stable. Last weekend, summer arrived. The skies cleared finally and it looks like we are in for a beautiful few months. To celebrate, Empire‘s various stages were filled local party jams to help everyone make that transition from spring to summer easy. I went there to catch up with Whiite Walls and The Black & White Years and to check out the new stuff from Night Drive (not just the cool shirts, new jams).

Click through for a few thoughts and plenty of pics…
