Have A Nice Weekend

artworks-000056441358-m66lnv-t500x500Busy lives are busy. I am still alive. New job, remodeling, family stuff…

Heard this song for the time in a few months and wanted to share to get your head right going into the weekend. It is called “Shape” and it is by Glasser. It is a layered beauty that is upbeat or downbeat depending on what your brain latches on to after you hit play.

See y’all at Red7 Saturday, OK? Now to figure out why I didn’t post it the first time I heard it…

New Jam From Bob Mould

MouldBob, It is a common mistake, sure, but it is Mr. Gray, G-R-A-Y.

Mr. Mould is back with a song that sounds like it is twenty years old, but still fresh as a daisy. Called “Hey , Mr. Grey”, the first single to hit the intarwebs from the pending Beauty & Ruin due June 3rd via Merge Records is a quick-hitting song following a classic formula of big chords and immediate lyrics. I missed Bob during SxSW, but had a chance to briefly chat during FFF late year. He seems energized, ready to play hits.

SxSW Film: What I Saw That You Should Too

Upload SxSW 2014 Film 20140308200729SxSW Film Festival is over. Unlike the Music portion, you can go see exactly what I saw.

Going in with the intention to see as many docs as possible, I was lured by several features. Now, those features all have music, so I guess I am OK. But I did still see a lot of docs and few that were very music related. For instance, I was kicking it at The Paramount with my bros in Spandau Ballet.

Here come some brief reviews of things you need to see and some related photos from the film side of the conference.

New Single from Andre Obin

andre obin - ways of escapeArsonist was one of my favorite albums last year, but Andre Obin is not resting on my accolades. This is a new track from the forthcoming Way Of Escape and is so damn good.

The song is called “Approaching Zero” and debuted at Impose earlier today. It starts out with a rather light Phantogram/Jagwar Ma-like opening sequence that has a bit of guitar and an airy pop sound … and then the synth-lines join. Andre mentioned on his personal bookface that he is very proud of the vocal. It is a wonderful recording made better with light processing that suits the mood, pulled back and an element of the melody bridging elements and moving the song forward.

Check out the rest of Andre’s work over on Soundcloud. I am a big fan.

The 2014 Austin Music Blogger Awards

AMBA 2014 Photo BannerIt was a great event. We were proud to be a part of it.

I have a list of winners and so many photos. Orthy sounded great, buoyed by Ian and Jeramy’s win for best DJs as Learning Secrets. Shivery Shakes ripped after their win for “Sidewalk Talk”. Jess was charming and haunting as ever, congrats. A Giant Dog stole the show with their set, while Mirror Travel may have given some voters buyer’s remorse. Magna Carda is hip-hop in Austin; go see them.

Show Pics: Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr @ Emos’ (2/22)

Dale Earnhardt Jr JrI have a confession to make. I asked to go to this show to shoot Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. I was really more excited to see Chad Valley. That said, I ended up being quite impressed with the Dale Jr. Jr. on the eve of their big Daytona 500 win. How did they get there in time? Jr.

There was a rabid crowd that showed up early to reserve a spot to dance in the more personal small venue version of Emo’s, thankfully now divided by a proper curtain bisecting the room at the soundboard to tighten up the sound a bit versus the camouflage net previously used.

Read on for a few more notes and plenty of pics.

Have A Nice Weekend With Yumi Zouma

Yumi ZoumaMy friend Mike Taylor turned on to this track during his show on Amazing Radio. He is the ex-Woxy guy that should be running radio in Austin. The guy can pick the jams. This one is slightly less jammy, but a wonderful song nonetheless.

This Australian/New Zealand based artist has a release on Cascine that you can stream on the Cascine SoundCloud page. You should listen to the whole thing, but here is one of the highlights, a song called “Riquelme”.

Show Pics: Young Girls EP @ Lambert’s (2/20)

EPPretty straight forward night of jams to celebrate the launch of the Young Girls EP. We got a little silly, we listened to some music, we watched the Rockets lose. Nathan was happy about that, Pete was not.

As the big bonus, we got to hang out with ATH old friends like Shivery Shakes and more recent friends like Reservations. I’ll just let everyone know now that it was a dream local lineup for Team ATH and we were there to the bitter end shimmying despite duties as assigned in the morning.

Check out the pics for proof after the break.

Feel free to debate the merits of this year’s Bonnaroo lineup and the effect the Cold War has had on the proliferation of beet-related soups in western countries. There is a video for the announcement, everyone. Embed after the break.

Sir Elton John – Let’s all sing along, cause this means he’ll prolly be closing ACL on Sunday.

Subtract the ACL headliners and you have a nice estimate of artists that will grace either ACL or Fun Fun Fun Fest in 2014.

See you at Lambert’s.
