Smooth But Strong Track From Tycho

Awake-Cover-564_0Tycho is a go to artist for me on rainy days or when I put the nose to the virtual grindstone. We are going to be getting the drizzle and work has been work. Time for the soothing sounds of Tycho.

But what’s this? Could it be the Great Pumpkin? No, it is Scott Hansen using a sweet bassline with just a bit of anger behind it before falling into customary Tycho-styled tones and waves. And I love it. This first single called “Awake” happens to be the title track. Tycho was one of my favorite things from FFF8. BTW, you can get the Vinyl of their previous effort Dive right here.

Free Week 2014 Info

Free Week 2014It is upon us. The turn of the year is accompanied by Free Week, a way to fill that void between the Holidays and school kicking back in. This year’s lineup is looking strong insuring you will part with plenty of dollars in Red River venues to damage your liver.

Now, I want you to remember that while the doors are free for you people old enough to partake in adult beverages ($5 for the early upstart show-goers), that doesn’t mean you get off with out parting with a dollar or two. BUY SOME MERCH! SUPPORT THE BANDS or Nathan will come to your house and hold a boom box over his head Say Anything style blaring Miley’s greatest hits from the Hana Montana days until your eyes bleed. It is a bog boom box. Seriously, support the people behind the great jams, buy the vinyl you kept saying you would buy at the previous shows or get a t-shirt to out obscure your mainstream friends. We love you.

Take a gander at the poster and see many ATH approved locals. Full who, where, when schedule is still pending release. Join the Free Week Bookface thing for updates…

PYAITK: !!! Does Christmas Right

CHKX3 XMASWho doesn’t like a sweaty dance party at Christmas time? Nobody.

!!! has a new 7″ out featuring a smooth and dark dance jam called “And Anyway It’s Christmas” and it is not your typical Christmas carol. I was thinking of how there hasn’t been a recent song for the season that didn’t suck, maybe Low did one, suggestions are welcome. The seasonal jams I go back to every year involve the Peanuts crews (Vince Guaraldi’s A Charlie Brown Christmas rules all). I recently heard some uber cheesy song about a dude in line at the store buying a kid that didn’t have enough money shoes for a dying mother. It was so creepy.

Anyway, smooth beats are better.

Psych Fest Releases Prelim Lineup

Psych Fest 2014Austin Psych Fest is entering year seven and will return to Carson Creek Ranch this year. We finally have an idea what will be goign on out at the Ranch with this preview poster image that hit the intarwebs a little bit ago. Primal Scream, Loop, The Zombies and The Horrors are the “headliners” on the poster with the obigatory set from The Black Angels. There is plenty to be excited about beyond that and the Fest is allegedly holding back some big names.

Check out some pics from last year here. I think the new location will give them room to grow and should get better and better…

Happy Thanksgiving

ATH TurkeyWhile we take a moment to reflect, appreciative of the friends and family that fill our lives, let’s not forget the important stuff, the music. That’s right friends and family, we’re gathering our best-of lists already and will have a giant playlist of awesomeness and a stack of albums you should buy before 2013 gets away from in the coming weeks.

Thankful list:
C3 and Transmission for festivals and shows and the independents filling the gaps
– Venues around town we call home like The Mohawk, Stubb’s, ACL Live and any place on Red River or east of 35, or that has bands on a regular basis we like to see (so all the venues I guess).
– Record Stores for collecting our moneys in exchange for ear candy
– PR people that make sure we don’t miss anything
– Most importantly, You, the people of the internet that read and listen and trust us to bring you the jams – THANK YOU!

Now go take care of the important stuff – Food and beverage, napping while football is on the television (muted), getting greasy fingers on your best vinyl…

PYAITK: Mavis Gary Has A Hit

mavis garyMy friend and former woxy.com DJ, Mike Taylor, spun this gem as part of his weekly show on Amazing Radio. Real beauty and I have to agree that though this is a fairly lo-fi offering with the layers of melodies making it full and rich; this a must listen.

Mavis Gary is actually the “band name” for a side project recently launched by Adrian Ng (65 likes on bookface launched 10/16, so wet paint here). The title track, “Pin Me Up”, to the 10 song album is a streamable beauty of indie pop and you will dig. The rest of the album does not disappoint if you liek this one and it is a pay your conscience at the Mavis Gary Bandcamp so kick a few bucks and DL.

Sometimes You Just Have To Give In…

640px-Sky_Ferreira_the_pageant_2013_1This is an admission. I like a Sky Ferreira song. “You’re Not The One” from Night Time, My Time is a perfectly balanced pop song that deserves a listen. I may get blasted by my ATH teammates, but damn this is catchy and I have to admit to everyone that it is among the top jams in my head right now. A great guitar hook rings over floating fluty-synth substance in standard pop song structure, it is a hit.

I resisted the hype machine, the tour O_o announcements, the drug arrests, the album cover controversy, the buzz, but I hide no more. I feel better and can go into my weekend with an eased mind.
