ACL 2013 Recap – Saturday (10/5)

Fridays tend to ease you in, Saturdays tend to beat you down. Or at least the odds of self-inflicted wounds go up exponentially. You have a little hangover, perhaps you start the day with a bloody mary, but by the end you are shirtless, missing a flip-flop and wondering why your hand is blue. For me, it was a pretty non-stop run at awesome; I won at Festival.

Click-through for a few notes on the first Saturday. *spoiler alert* The Cure wins in the end.

Glitchy R&B From Wet

ACL is about to be all up on us, but how about some new mellow synths pop goodness with a side of pre-turn of the century R&B?

Wet brings us the track “Dreams”. It is the opening track on the EP due 10/15 on Neon Gold. Though this is their first album, the three piece has been doing the music thing for seven years. The highlight is the vocal from Kelly Zutrau. Breaks, beats and swells with guitars ringing to fill it out. Have a listen.

Freebie From Chad Valley

Anyone that reads the site should know of my love for Chad Valley and all things Hugo Manuel. To celebrate the tour with Keep Shelly In Athens (which isn’t getting anywhere near us BOO), there is a download of the tasty morsel of pop synth goodness over on the Cascine soundcloud.

Younger Hunger is still in heavy rotation on the weekend playlists in the IT Department. Vastly underrated album that features Glasser, Active Child and Twin Shadow

Catching Up With RJD2

You know, we leave a lot to be desired when it comes to covering indie hip-hop. This post proves we acknowledge you might want to nod yo head.

RJD2 has put out some pretty sweet records to kill time to and the latest album will be out soon, October 8th if you must know. The album is called More Is Than Isn’t and you can stream all of it over at Potholes In My Blog. This track features a collaboration with Phonte Coleman. It is a slick jam.

RJD2 will be at FFF8.

Freakout With Beaty Heart

I am not a big Animal Collective fan, save for Merriweather Post Pavillion. It was a consensus no brainer best-of for us. The follow-up, not so much.

Thankfully, it seems that Beaty Heart has picked up with the various bears and creatures of the collective could not and put out this sweet little piece of psych-pop. It shares the lovingly effected vocal echo, the conflict of presence and distance, and building layers around a wonderful guitar hook. It is quite fun. LOOOOK OOUUUTTT!!

Debut record from the band, Mixed Blessings, lands 11/11 on Nusic.

More From Young Galaxy

Deluxe Edition of Ultramarine promotion continues.

Young Galaxy has another track up to send a shiver to your giggly bits. This one has a bit of a Eurythmics feel, in their darker times, a track Marilyn Manson would consider remaking. Maybe it can restart his career. I have seen pictures from recent shows. I guess he still tours. I have never seen Nathan and Marilyn Manson together. I am suspicious.

Back to Young Galaxy, I like this song. Quite a bit. You should, too.

ACL Spotlight: Early Bird Specials

When taking the first look at the ACL Schedule for each weekend, I tend to first see the conflicts in headliners. Luckily, we are fairly conflict free this year, we’ll get into that more soon enough. How about we take a look at a few of the artists put in the early spots? The cool morning grass, the wide expanses to roam and the vendors still relaxed before the dude-bro crush all add up to a child-like wonderment with the scale of the empty festival giving you the this all-for-me feeling. This year’s ATH Approved Early Bird Artists will create the soundtrack for your barefoot dance party.

Show Pics: Daughter @ The Mohawk (9/17)

There aren’t too many bands out there right now on the up swing of buzz that Daughter currently enjoys. The Mohawk was kind enough to host the freshly minted headliners as they rolled through town in a big bus, pulling a trailer with guitar techs and stage managers en employ. Though the forecast threatened a rain out, the people streamed in to endure the moist conditions and sweat to their new favorite band. Bear’s Den opened.

Show Pics: Austra @ The Mohawk (9.13)

I really enjoy the nights when I can double up shows. A positive of the noise ordinance regulations is that the outdoor shows at Stubb’s and The Mohawk finish early enough to head over to another venue to do more shimmying. We already shared show notes and pics from Dent May, now we have some Austra love.

This ended up being a very photogenic show. DIANA was a pleasant surprise and the light show and ever-improving stage presence of Katie Stelmanis made Austra a true headliner.
