Young Galaxy Preps Deluxe Edition

I’m not so interested in the re-release of Ultramarine, but sometimes a deluxe edition comes with a new track or two. Young Galaxy decided to share a single called “Sea Drug”.

It is a lovely piece of pop music that has subtle flourishes throughout, thoughtful and crafty production. Use that first link in the post to preorder your copy of Ultramarine which includes B-Sides and a “Crying My Heart Out”.

Fancy Some Black Light Dinner Party?

One of my favorites from 2011, Black Light Dinner Party, are releasing their full-length Sons and Lovers on September 24th. They’ll be playing some shows up around the northeast. From what I understand, they put on a pretty lively set. Dance.

Give it a run, this title track is a fun little jaunt that starts softly and progresses right into some slow pop jam territory and lets you off the hook easy…

Smooth Jam From Holy Ghost!

Holy Ghost! knocked out a lovely opening set for New Order about a month back. I took killer pics. /me is modest.

The only real bummer about their spot was the timing; the new jams were still too far from release to be ready for the stage. Don’t get me wrong, I love the tracks that exist in the wild and all of the hits that helped prove to my less-obsessed friends it was worth it to show up early. Recently, there have been a few preview clips, which are stupid IMHO, for the pending release on DFA called Dynamics.

Stream the real thing below, “Okay” is a pretty chill release, but I can see it getting into rotation for the weekend playlist.

PYAITK: Keep Shelly In Athens

Since Nathan is playing catch up, I may as well post a song I like, but didn’t share. Sharing is caring so…

Keep Shelly In Athens sent a track to the world, a track called “Oostende”. It is a single from the forthcoming LP At Home via Cascine out 9/17. It’s a pretty atmospheric number, as you’d expect, somber but inspiring. The lofty vocals and wonderful synth hook trade the lead role, one picks up as the other lets off. Check it.

Show Pics: Knifight @ a Benefit, Daughn Gibson @ Red7

I love nights when I can see a bunch of bands, SxSW style, bouncing back and forth between venues to be able to see acts we have talked about here, but not yet seen live and still manage to check out the headliners we dig. Last Thursday was one such night. We had the Attendance Records Benefit at The Mohawk that featured ATH local favorites Knifight and a show at Red7 headlined by Daughn Gibson that included fresh locals Silk Rodeo in an opening slot.

In total, pics of four bands, a few whiskeys, plenty of friends and I get to say I did it “for the kids”. Well, half of it, anyway. Click through for random thoughts and plenty of pics…

New Gem from Teen Daze

Teen Daze released two strong albums last year, The Inner Mansions and personal fave All of Us, Together. Both are chock-full o’ chilly waves of background music for your couch surfing cocktail party that can also hold up to critical listening.

Seems Jamison is staying busy, Glacier is set to release on 10/1 on Lefse Records. Pre-order is available here. No tour dates for Austin yet.

Enjoy Your Weekend PYAITK – Soft Metals

Trolling around some playlists on the internets while at the IT Department Data Center, came across this gem from Soft Metals. We last posted about them two years ago. They are back with an album called Lenses that was available 7/16 and I like this dark but dance-able beauty of synth goodness.

Give it a listen and tell me if you dig it. Or don’t. Fine be that way. I mean, jeez. Just sharing a tune. OK? Sorry. Long week. I have to return some video tapes. Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?

Stream A Clap Your Hands Say Yeah EP

I was on the fence about the last chunk of material from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I am a fan of this title track from the freshly unleashed EP called “Little Moments”. It is a synth driven builder clocking in at a little over three minutes with a vocal that sounds like it was recorded in a living room. It might be digitally-driven, but it has a bit of the raw nerve that I loved from early works.

Stream the title track right down there and listen to the rest over on Bandcamp.

Show Review: New Order @ Austin Music Hall (7/19)

Let’s take a moment to reflect. New Order and (by inevitable association) Joy Division have been a massive influence on what I listen to even now. Recent songs shared here from bands like Flaamingos and Knifight could easily be tagged. Substance is standard issue listening, isn’t it? How could it not have an impact? So to see New Order, an elusive bucket-list band, announce the first North American show of their tour would be in Austin – well, it was a big day.

…and then I got the approval email to shoot the show. My head nearly exploded.

Holy Ghost! opened, added win. Read on for gushing fanboyisms and plenty of pics.

Happy Friday With St. Lucia

Preparations are underway at the IT Dept. for tonight’s sold out show at the Austin Music Hall with a little band called New Order. Heard of ’em? Bonus to get a favorite in Holy Ghost to open things up.

If you are getting ready to dance with the rest of us old people or just bummed that you missed out on tix, this track is here to help. It is by St. Lucia. I happened to hear it on an MOKB session on Sirius XM and remembered I wanted to post it just now. When The Knight lands on October 8th via Neon Gold.

I get to photograph New Order tonight…
