ATX Spotlight: Stream the Jared Leibowich Album

jzI’ve always known that Jared Zoltar had a knack for writing incredible tunes; he’s been crafting timeless pop music with the Zoltars here in Austin for some time, but could he keep it up on his own? Um, the answer’s a definite yes! Welcome Late Bloomers is his new solo-outing under his given name, Jared Leibowich, and it’s probably going to end up in my personal year end list of great things to come out of Austin in 2015. I don’t know, I’ve been listening to this non-stop and now I feel like I’m fawning over Jared, so let’s just say it’s your turn to fawn over him. He’ll also be playing a residency at Beerland all through October, so be sure to catch one of his shows…it’s always worth your time. His new album is available now through Unblinking Ear Records.

3 x 3 Series Show @ Mohawk (9.21) w/ Templo X, Ultraviolet, Mean Jolene

image1At the very end of August we brought you the first of what we hope is an on-going series, 3 x 3…it’s 3 bands for 3 bucks. Well, we’re back at it with a new show this coming Monday evening, and a whole new set of bands. This event is sponsored by Tullamore Dew, which means all door money goes straight to the bands on the night. Who’s playing? Opening the night will be the new kid in town, Mean Jolene. It’s the new project from some of our friends in Those Howlings. Then, in no particular order, the shoegaze-tastic Ultraviolet, who just recently released their EP; and, the gem of the night is our very own Templo X, who will be playing their last ATX show before Paul has to leave town for a bit. Come on guys, 3 bands, 3 bucks. Doors at 8 PM @ the Mohawk.

ATX Spotlight: Grivo

11000827_1662911327269974_5012879236338174425_nHave we mentioned before that Austin is chock full of incredibly promising bands on the rise?  No?  Well it is.  Yet again here is a band from the ATX called Grivo who I’ve seen on some bills around town, but never actually taken the time to listen to.  I’m pleased with myself for giving the band a few spins today as I’m rather enjoying what I’ve discovered.  The band is describes their sound as primarily shoe gaze, though to me it’s as if they are in a genre all their own.  Think shoe gaze blended with dark and melodic pop sounds.  You’ll just have to hit play to see what I mean.

Check out more tunes from Grivo on their bandcamp page.

ATH Premiere: Meet Stiletto Feels

stilettofeels-1We here at ATH have long been fans of the craftsmanship of Geoff Earle, formerly of Freshmillions, who now has a brand new project we’d like to introduce you to (and a new record label-GTZ): Stiletto Feels. I’ve been listening to this track quite a bit since Geoff passed it our way; it’s like a blend of Ratatat and MSTRKFT, but with a really smooth soul vocal added to it. You can groove or you can dance, but you’re going to fall in love. It’s going to be the first release for Earle’s new label, GTZ Records, who will be celebrating with a nice Single Release Party on Saturday night over at Empire Control Room. Get into the song below.

ATX Spotlight: New Sweet Talk

ST_25_copyDisclosure: I’m friends with Stephen from Sweet Talk. That fact, however, has no bearing on the fact that the group have just completed what I hope is one of the surprise breakout records of Austin this year, Double Perfect. I’m not saying that from the friend side, but the music side; the guitar driven pop rock he’s kicking out on this record, particularly this song, should be enough to garner recognition as one of the city’s great talents.  Personally, I love the varying vocal inflections he throws out on this track, especially when he’s driving home the message of the track around the 2.11 mark of the song.  You can grab the LP on October 16th via 12XU, and if you don’t, I’ll be rather sad…for you.

ATX Popfest Playlist – Show Saturday @Cheer Up Charlies

11895936_10207422291186088_4494044377145704198_nWe’re really excited to be part of the first ATX Popfest, trying to encourage love and adoration for our favorite local pop bands. The event features 10 of the best pop bands in Austin, and it’ll be going from 7 – Close over at Cheer Up Charlies. I figured the whole world might not be aware of our scene, so why not create a little playlist to get you hip to what we’ll be throwing down on Saturday.  Two notes, Polio Club have been battling Soundcloud, and have chosen instead to only stream their music via Tidal, so you can buy their excellent tape HERE.  Also, Literature is not officially playing, but members past and present will be playing in Tres Oui, and we’re hoping Nate will DJ late into the evening…playing indiepop hits.

ATX Spotlight: Meet Garland

garlandGarland sent over some songs our way early this week, and the big single is pretty much a guaranteed indie rock hit. It’s the second time in a matter of a few days where I’ve been taken back to early 2000s indie rock, which as I’ve previously stated is one of my favorite eras. You might actually recognize the man behind the project, as Spencer Garland has played in various ATX bands, most notably working behind the keys for Berkshire Hounds. We’ll keep you posted on record release plans and all that, but we wanted Garland on your radar as soon as we could get it there.

Show Preview: Nick Diamonds @ Holy Mountain – TONIGHT

islands14You’ve got about a month to close out the existence of Holy Mountain, and like we all expect, the venue is doing it in style, leaving you with some great shows (and memories).  Tonight is no different, as they’re bringing Nick Diamonds of Unicorns, Islands, Human Highway and Mister Heavenly. Whether you know it or not, Nick’s had a pretty big influence in the indie music realm, and in the ATH offices, so it’s probably best you go see him in such a small space.  Plus…he’s friends with Michael Cera, so maybe that guy will show up since his movie career is over. The Tulips will be opening, so come early, celebrate Nick and Holy Mountain.

ATX Spotlight: Ultraviolet Release EP

ultravioletYou should probably clear a little bit of your schedule today. You’ll need roughly 25 minutes, give or take a few seconds, that way you can absorb this great new EP from Ultraviolet.  The Austin act has been crafting really dense shoegaze, filled with distant guitar echoes and airy vocals from singer Caitlin. This new EP just went up HERE the other day, and I wanted to be sure it’s on your radar, as I encourage you to listen all day today. Then, since it’s good for your soul and for Austin, you should donate a buck or five to the group (if you like it), so they can continue to make great tunes. Stream one of the tunes below…and look out for news on the band’s next live show!
