Have A Nice Weekend with OMD

We love Nation of Language around these parts. They were the best thing about ACL last year. Their upcoming record is going to be an absolute banger given recent well-shared singles. Did you know one of their key influences was OMD? Of course, you did. Listen to “Wounds of Love” not tell me it is a love letter to the synth pop, hit making pioneers. The thing is, OMD is still making music. Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys reunited in the 2006 after a brief time apart after Andy kept the ship afloat following their success in the 80’s. Since then, new material has been released, as well as one of the best box set releases in Souvenir. We may have missed the single release for this post, but you gotta give it the duo for keeping loyal to their roots yet modernizing their sound on “Bauhaus Staircase”. The song is the title track to the upcoming release in October, which they have hinted may be the band’s last. This video is pretty damn cool and the synth riff in the break just before the two minute mark, perfect.

Looking for something a little different for your weekend? There is plenty happening. If you want to have some solid foodtruck snacks while listening to DJs play the beats, check out Piknik Electronik. A friend went to the party up in Montreal, said it was fantastically run and made for a pleasant weekend that ratchets up in BPM as the sun goes down. Tickets are available at the door, the whole thing happens at Auditorium Shores.

Soccer, erm football, fan? I’ll be at Scholtz’s for the NBCSN Premier League Mornings Live Fan Fest in my prized Tottenham third kit and Spurs scarf. #COYS

Finally, a good friend to ATH has some sweet jams available to add to your playlists. Orthy is back with the Austin Disco Synth Pop sounds you love. “Your Spell” is the first song back in five years Ian and team. The full-length Fable Living is due in January. Hang with this jam as it evolves and gets layered up.

I continue to be amazed by the highly ambitious Drift project Underworld set out on, to release a song with a visual every Thursday. Yes, some have been re-imagined works, but the excitement is in new material that is good most of the time, and phenomenal the rest of the time. Check out the latest release “Imagine A Box”.

Aside from that, it is a fun weekend for shows, especially Saturday with Missions doing a record release on one stage at Barracuda, locals covering Radiohaed songs on the other. Cheer Up has ATH faves like Annabelle Chairlegs and Go Fever, while next door Black Pumas will be on night two of three in a row at Mohawk. I’ll leave you with a favorite cut from Missions great album Subcreature. “Glimmer” drifts in and evolves to a fantastic exit.

Hot Summer Nights is in full swing. Thanks to the Red River Cultural District for being rad. Gonna see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Sunday. You? Should we talk movies? Maybe soundtracks?

TR/ST has shared a track off of Destroyer Pt. 2. Pre-order here. It is one of those amazing songs that can make you sink to internal depths and lift you up at the same time, that conflict of negative understones and ringing, climbing leads floating just above.

Good show last night, good shows this weekend, but going to watch the footie in Houston. This week’s HANW track is from Missions, the second single from the pending Holodeck Records release Subcreature due August 2nd. It is an Italian disco synth laden piece of bliss with buried vocoder vocals. Zone out for a bit at the office and dream of tallboys and new vinyl smell.

Sometimes a friend on the intarwebs shares a band with you via the social media to PYAITK. Fellow music photog Randy tagged me in a post due to my penchant for synth pop after he stumbled across Nation of Language on a Soundcloud bender. They were supposed to come for SxSW where I probably would have stumbled into one of their sets and subsequently followed them around, but recording took the budget. Developing.

I wanted to highlight a few shows, but Nathan killed that.

Instead, I am going to focus on a PYAITK scenario. There has been so much hype around SURVIVE and deservedly so, super talented team of analog synth artists. Anyone obsessed with SURVIVE should certainly take some time to review the history of the genre, and in particular, spend time with Orbital. Orbital is Paul and Phil Hartnoll, brothers residing in Brighton. I have loved this band since the release of “Chime/Midnight” and “Belfast” singles. Their releases have been remarkably staggered over the last decade, long breaks between releases, sabbaticals, final tours, reunions. But there is a new single and from a new record, which I can only dream will result in them coming close enough to Austin for me to see them again for the first time since the late 90’s. They lead the path that many stopped following, but popularized again by the analog synth revolution, live programming their performances, even “recording live” on occasion. If you know not of the band, I recommend Orbital II (aka the Brown Album) and In Sides to kick you off.

The track featured in the gorgeous video below is called “Tiny Foldable Cities” from the forthcoming Monsters Exist due in September.

Hey.

So there are some things going on tonight. I’ll be in nostalgia land with OMD at Emos. It is sold out. They are bringing along GGOOLLDD to open. Should be a pleasant evening with the wife. I was telling a co-worker that the last time I saw OMD, you realize that there are bands still touring to make pay for their landscaping and others that still really love their songs. OMD is the latter and it doesn’t hurt that the new stuff is solid, too. There is also a fellow photographer’s belated birthday party at Cheer Up. Super lineup.

Little Boots has a new EP out. You can listen to a few tracks over at Soundcloud and on youtube. I added “Picture” to my Soundcloud bucket. The Bucket is my catch all, a little under four hours, full of my faves from ATH and some other randoms. Try it out, below.
