ACL Spotlight: The Dodos

dodosfeatureSo last year during ACL we worked our tails off trying to bring you guys the best interviews, spotlights, battles and all kinds of crazy lists.  We may still be a month out from the festival date but we thought it would be an appropriate time to start our spotlight feature on various ACL artists that we like.  Our first spotlight goes to The Dodos and is taken on by our newest addition to ATH, mwiliamrice.  So follow the jump for our first ACL feature on The Dodos.

It’s that time of year again friends: Austin City Limits! Here at Austin Town Hall, in the coming weeks, we will be focusing on some lesser known artists that you may be interested in checking out while you wait for the Dave Matthews Band (we know you are just going to check them out “ironically”, right? Right?).  Today we will be meeting San Francisco’s The Dodos.

The Dodos, lead by Meric Long on guitar and vocals and Logan Kroeber on percussion, began playing their jangly brand of folk rock in 2005, self-releasing their first album, Beware of the Maniacs, in 2006.  After relentless touring the Dodos were signed to French Kiss Records in 2007, who released their breakthrough album, Visiter in 2008.

Visiter, with Long’s angular guitar work and Kroeber’s intricate drumming, was widely praised throughout the blogosphere (I say that like it’s a real thing!) even receiving a Best New Music label from Pitchfork Media (I say that like I understand how they review their records!).  Sadly, the Dodos may be best known for licensing their song ‘Fools’ to advertise the disgusting Miller Chill (It’s no Treaty Oak Platinum Rum, but what is?).

On September 15th, the Dodos will be releasing their excellent third album, Time to Die. For this release the Dodos added a third member, Keaton Snyder, who will take up xylophone duties. This new addition brings a maturity to the Dodos already stellar sound making this band a must see at this years Austin City Limits Festival.

The Dodos take the Live Strong Stage at ACL on Sunday, October 4th at 12:30 p.m.

For our Houston brethren: The Dodos will be playing at the one and only Orange Show on Saturday, October 3rd.
